One of my coworkers recounted a first date to a sushi restaurant where they had some menu item that was crazy hot and i believe it was a “you eat free” if you consumed it. He figured, “hey, I’m Mexican, I can handle hot stuff”. He said he started to question the wisdom when he was asked to sign a waiver, and the unease grew when the kitchen staff mobilized out to watch. It did not end well...
He did get a second date though, ARF!

It sounds like they were involved in a really dumb prank or dare.
From such experiences, wisdom is gained—if one is smart enough to learn the lesson.

Perhaps some of the cafeteria workers were graciously seeking to introduce the young racist students to the spicy foods of their ancient culture.

These peppers can be dangerous for people with any kind of respiratory or underlying illnesses they may not know they have.....I won't be surprised if someone dies if this is a new trend.

tearing of eyes, sweating and general discomfort. Well geezus, no shiite Sherlock, Ghost peppers are serious business.. I doubt even East L.A. Schools would serve them.
My wife gained a new appreciation for the mildness of Habaneros after I bought a Ghost pepper plant and used it in a few recipes. Scorpion peppers are another cut higher, and almost useless for anything but pain.

Once upon a time parents would have laughed and said to their kids, "That'll learn ya!"
Now we are having an investigation?
If the kids were forced to eat them, that is one thing. As it is they volunteered for the pain and they got it.
Has the school nothing better to do?

"Louisiana" hot sauce isn't hot enough for me. I mix 12oz of it half and half with vinegar, 3 heaping teaspoons cayenne and 1 teaspoon salt.
