CONCORD, N.C. Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports, has not been medically cleared to compete for the remainder of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season as he continues to recover from a concussion.
Earnhardt has missed the last six Sprint Cup races while undergoing treatment. He has been regularly evaluated at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program under the direction of Dr. Micky Collins and with Charlotte neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty.
I wish I could return to the No. 88 team this season, Earnhardt said. To say Im disappointed doesnt begin to describe how I feel, but I know this is the right thing for my long-term health and career. Im 100 percent focused on my recovery, and I will continue to follow everything the doctors tell me. Theyre seeing good progress in my test results, and Im feeling that progress physically. I plan to be healthy and ready to compete at Daytona in February. Im working toward that.
The support from both inside and outside the race team has been overwhelming. Everyone has been so encouraging and positive, from my teammates and sponsors to my family, friends and fans. Its motivating and humbling at the same time.
Jeff Gordon and Alex Bowman will drive for the No. 88 team in the seasons 12 remaining races. In Earnhardts absence, four-time Cup Series champion Gordon, 45, filled in at Indianapolis, Pocono, Watkins Glen and Bristol. Bowman, 23, drove at New Hampshire and Michigan.
I know how hard Dale has worked and how frustrating this is for him, said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. He wants to be back, and we want him back, but we want it to be for the long haul. Weve had incredible support from everyone involved with the team, including all of our sponsors. Theyve put Dales health first every step of the way.
Jeff and Alex will give us a great opportunity over the rest of the season. Jeff is one of the best of all time and knows our system. He brings things to the table that no one else can. Alex is a young driver with a lot of talent, and he will give us a fresh perspective. We know theyre not only capable of running up front and giving us a chance to win, but theyll help us get better.
A little off topic but I’ve been thinking all week about the difference between NASCAR and the NFL and their athletes and fans. Earnhardt vs Kaepernick sums up my feelings.
Quite a difference - I’ll take NASCAR people any day. Most lefties I’ve met hate NASCAR and think it’s fans are stupid/uneducated. While defending NFL athletes who commit violent crimes at a far higher rate than NASCAR (it seems).
I’d be willing to bet Kaepernick that members of his profession commit many more violent crimes as a percentage than the police who he is condemning. Has he condemned his own profession and demanded change as he tells police that they need to condemn and change their’s?
This is worrisome when you think about other drivers who seemed to be in similar situations and never came back, Nadeau and Parks come to mind first.
Drivers take some big hits, but I hadn't realized how many really hard hits he'd taken that had clearly hurt him.
The cars and the driver's in-car safety equipment continue to improve, especially so in recent years thanks in no small measure to the loss of his dad Dale Sr. at Daytona in 2001.
They're also getting better at applying their growing understanding of the physics of crashing to the racetracks themselves, too.
But, take a look at Keselowski's spectacular crashes, especially the recent hard crash while testing at Watkins Glen, for an understanding of the hits these drivers take, and listen to him talking about the Watkins Glen crash and the need to keep improving safety.
The body can heal itself, but bone and brain take a while, even under ideal circumstances.
Ideal circumstances simply don't include more NASCAR crashes, whether it's a young brain or a 40-something brain, that's just not a good plan.
Dale Jr. is very wise taking whatever time he needs out of the car to heal...whether he wants to or not.
I'm guessing he'll want the memories of today and yesterday in 20 years or so.
They're going to be worth far more than more 2016 time in the 88 car.
Who’s ‘Miss Remainder’?
Hillary has permanent brain damage, yet has been cleared to be prez.
Whos Miss Remainder?Hope she throws better than Miss Texas.
She is a sweet looking girl but I am sure we have more beautiful girls in Texas than her. Maybe the real beauties didn’t enter the competition.
It is sad for him as his balance is messed up.
He is an Icon around here and across the country in NASCAR.
His family are decent hard working folks that has much respect in the racing community.
The funny part is Flash driving his car, I get a chuckle out of that.
Recovering from a Concussion?
At least he is healthy enough to run for POTUS.
I heard she came from a very divisive family...
Yes, my old commie boss tried to give me a ration of ###t for being a fan from time to time. Just laughed at her. That grinds their gears more than anything. Heh.
The headline writer needs to be sent to the re-education camp. That should be Ms. Remainder, at the very least.
Concussions are serious business....ask the WITCH.
Sadly, I think the chances are higher than 50% Dale Earnhardt, Jr. retires on the advice of his doctors.
