Drives all my self-regarding teacher friends nuts when I point out that Johnny isn’t in class half the time due to in-service days, vacations, breaks, etc.

Cuz they don't have comic books.
We became excellent readers thanks to comic books....not from reading Shakespeare.

They don't read Shakespeare any more.
They read books about Black oppression and Jewish percesuction (one such is a "graphic novel" about Nazi mice).
In schools the goal is not learning to read, it's learning how white men abuse the other races.

I think the mice were the Jews in that one. Nazis were cats, following the predictable cartoon meme that cats are the bad guys/losers (Tom & Jerry, Sylvester & Tweety/Speedy Gonzales, etc.)

I learned how to read from phonics. I sounded out the words. I pronounced the word island, “is land.” Finally, The teacher read aloud the word island and I learned that the English language is not always perfect. The s in that word is silent. With most kids the failure to learn is from laziness and a lack of parental guidance. And there are a few cases of eye and hearing problems. The eye and hearing problems can usually be corrected. If the parents don’t care about the learning achievements of the kid then usually that kid will be a lousy student.

Yes, I stand corrected.
Didn't read it, just lamented the fact that the teacher I was subbing for considered that "educational".

Maus is classic. Indeed, the Jews were the mice. The Poles were depicted as pigs, The Germans were the cats.

I read Maus years back, IIRC there were 2 volumes at our county library. For those who've not read it, it's highly recommended reading. Not just any old comic book!
