These misconceptions or behaviors that work in Latin America but dont work here because buildings are different here, earthquakes are different here, says Pablo Ampuero, professor of seismology at Caltech.
Its the first time Caltech has hosted an event like this, where the community engaged directly with scientists and experts, asking questions and getting important answers.
The event stressed the importance of being prepared for disaster. And how earthquakes here in the US are different from those in other parts of the world.
When you look at what the earthquake will do to us, it probably wont kill us, but its going to make life really miserable. Were going to not have power or water, you wont be able to go to work, you may not have a place to live, said Dr. Lucy Jones, the well-known seismologist.
Dr. Jones says one of the most important steps we can take is to build stronger community networks so people have the resources they need when the next big earthquake hits.

Much of LA, particularly the poorer urban areas, have structures that were built long before earthquake codes were in place.
These are places the academics have never visited.
The most important advice Dr. Jones gave to the latino community was, “steal a gun and ammunition, so when the earthquake comes you can rob and steal all the good sh!t from the gavacho, galleta, gringo, bastards that stole the state of california from you. VIVA RECONQUISTA”.
No phone, no light, no motorcar. Not a single luxuryyyyy.
“Women and minorities hit hardest.”
"agarrar los tobillos y despedirte de tu culo"
“Yes, American buildings are better, a loy BETTER!!! No sand in the concrete.”
Concrete used in construction is
#1 sand
#2 cement (Portland)
#3 agregate (rock)
The problem with Julio concrete is they don’t use enough Portland cement, and they don’t use the right amount or type of rock. Then they use weak or insufficient amounts of steel, and the results are buildings collapsing.
Were there instructions on where to use EBT cards and where to find Western Union money transfer services in the event of an earthquake?
