Japanese Prime Minister as Super Mario Ignites Social Media
NBC Bay Area ^ | 8/21

How do you connect the current host of the Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro, and the next, Tokyo?

Send in Super Mario, of course — with a little political help.

SNIP a video showed Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe, who announces he won't make it to Rio in time. So Abe turned into the Japanese video game plumber Mario and then popped up in the flesh out of a huge green pipe in the stadium that he allegedly used as a shortcut to get from Tokyo to Rio.

You can see that clearly Japan is light years ahead of Brazil. I can tell Tokyo is going to have their act together for 2020.

I thought that was cute....the Japanese presentation in the closing ceremony was pretty good...the Rio portion not so much.

Hmmmm.
2020 should be interesting here, but I’ve only seen about 30 minutes total of Olympics coverage because it’s so damned boring. Downtown bars should be pretty kicking with weird gaijin from a few months before the start of the games though.

Wait until the Space Invaders attack.

Is that a new Olympic sport?

I kept trying to watch some Olympic events but I find the announcers simply insufferable. I would tune in for a bit but then tune out soon..

The TV watching relative made me change the channel, she was bored... I wish I had seen it

It really takes no skill to be a journalist today. Most stories are DNC press releases or an article reporting about social media.

I watched a Lot of the Olympics moving between 3 channels we had here. I discovered I did not need “commentary” to enjoy the sports. I muted the commentary and listened to my favorite Pandora station. I do the same with baseball now. Who cares about what the commentators think about what I’m watching. I know what I think without their noise.

I thought the Olympics were pretty good and the coverage not too bad, except for the constantly jabbering commentators.
Are they paid by the word or something?

I made a prediction:

I predict the 2016 Summer Olympics will be a big fiasco and possibly the beginning of the end of the Olympic tradition, at least in its current form.

And I'm happy to say I was wrong.
Brazil delivered a good show in defiance of all the dissing (including mine).

I am hoping Tokyo does it really good, maybe i’m just anti latin but i wasn’t thrilled, impressed or even interested in anything about Brazil. Of course NBC has to serve it condensed, sorted and sterilized. The Mario scene was pretty good. Good luck Tokyo! They need it after the tsunami.

NBC COVERAGE OF THE RIO OLYMPICS

Not only did the announcers ever shut up, but most of the time what they were saying was lost in loud background noise.

Written info flashed on the screen during events was pathetic...half the time you might hear the name of the winner of an event, but you whistled for the runners-up and their countries. Print was too small.....timely bottom-of-the-screen banners with info were non-existent..... data flashed on and off too quickly to focus on and catch..... and identification on the screen of athletes and their countries (except for U.S. athletes) during many events was so inconsistent and disorganized you didn't know what the heck was going on half the time.

Since you could hardly hear or understand the non-stop drone of the announcers, and since screen graphics info was so awful, and for many other reasons, I have to put this Olympics NBC coverage as the worst I've ever seen, and I've seen decades and decades of this event.

I understand that bad reviews of the coverage are already flooding the internet regarding NBC's dismal, disjointed and pathetic TV coverage of the Rio event.

Yes. For some reason, all I could think of was knights pining for shrubberies.

Remember when you were a kid, digging a hole in the backyard...and your mother asked if you *were digging a hole to China*?
To find out where you’d end up...there’s an app for that
