During a weekend with three major new releases, holdovers Suicide Squad, from Warner Bros., and Sausage Party, from Sony, maintained their top spots at the box office. This means the big-budget reimagining of Ben-Hur, from Paramount Pictures and MGM, is one of the biggest flops of the summer.
The third version of Lew Wallaces 19th century novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ took in an estimated $11.4 million in the U.S and Canada, which was only good enough for fifth place. It met analyst projections of $10 million to $15 million, though the studio was aiming for an opening of $20 million in ticket sales. Such a performance is an unequivocal poor result for a movie that cost about $100 million to make (after rebates). The film brought in $10.7 million internationally.

Chuck Norris wears charlton Heston jammies
If they didn’t remake movies the version you think is the original wouldn’t exist, because it was the 3rd. Hollywood has always been about remakes, since before it was even in Hollywood. The “problem” really is that so many people have no idea what they’re talking about.
I heard someone on a conservative radio show say that if you judged it as a remake of the Heston film you would be disappointed. But if you looked at it as a retelling of the story it was actually decent.
Rush Limbaugh said that after he had a private viewing.
I wouldn’t believe anything the LA Times prints.
“”Ben Gay”
Good one. :-)
.
“I cannot imagine what they thought needed improving in the Heston version.”
Lessee now....
Consul Arius tells the beat drummer that he wants to go water skiing and reminds him that “ramming speed” just won’t cut it.
ALL of the chariots in the race are equipped with Vegematic chopping hubs.
The trampling of Messala is done in close up, slo-mo, one hoof stroke at a time with Messala’s screams slowed down too. Ben-hur takes one look and bursts out laughing while shouting “neener-neener-neener!!”.
Or did I miss something?
Agreed. The 1959 movie is truly an epic film from an era where that designation was not easily earned. Computer-generated detail and special effects may be impressive, but add nothing to the story or the acting.
Yes! Thank you!
They need new stories. So sick of the film industry making remakes and/or stupid sequels.
No. It’s not PC. Christ is magnified and I was pretty surprised. It stayed fairly true to the original. It’s worth the admission. Took my boys and they really enjoyed it too. Honestly, I was very curious about the back-story of Jesus going in...I was wondering what they would do with it. I came out pleased.
Or Ben-Gay.
Freeman is the number one reason I’ll only watch it for free if someone else decides we have to watch it.
Around 1960, The Gary Moore Show did a spoof of Ben Hur. It began with rear head and shoulders of a woman with blond hair to her shoulders and a head band, and the announcer says “And now, BEN HIM!”
At that moment the person turns around and we see Derwood Kirby in a wig. The audience went wild with laughter and Kirby was actually embarrassed on the stage. Oh it was funny!
HAHA! I am LOL!
It’s good not to go to the movies. Every dollar you spend goes into the pockets of rabid anti-American marxists that by a strange coincidence all share the same religion.
