I went to public schools. Never was abused or had sex with a teacher. The folks I knew who were Catholic were not a huge number but it was probably a third of the people I knew. Much of what the article argues is correct. But the point the author misses is that, unlike many other religious denominations or other organizations, the Catholic Church is a world-wide hierarchical entity that had the ability (and incentive) to move offending priests from one place to another to avoid public scandal (and thereby endanger more children). There have been sex-abuse scandals at synagogues and Protestant churches, but most of them lacked the ability to cover things up by moving the offender to a different parish.

Exactly my point for many years. Yes there are pedophiles/homosexuals in many arenas of daily life. However, the leadership of the Catholic Church was aware of many of these evil people and allowed it to continue. Yes the pedophile/homosexual is guilty of his crime, but heinous of an individual do you have to be to knowingly allow this to continue. These are not Christians who fear judgment! These are fallen individuals with a cushy job.
All the apologetics miss the one sin that has put the church in the position that it’s in. They aggressively hid and covered up for the pedophiles. Priests were not slapped on the face on the church steps and driven away.
Had they done so, they wouldn’t be seen as they generally are now. They blew an amazing chance to show who they were. They sided with gay priests and hid them away, covering up what they did.

That once was true. In our present day, Priests are removed; if only because of the threat of bankruptcy - BXVI also deserves credit for the changes instituted during his Papacy.

Since the Catholic Church is ‘other worldly’ in temperament; its focus has always been on salvation.
As its mantra has been, “Reject the sin yet embrace the sinner”; the Church has always had an unconscious tolerance for homosexuals.
Add to this, the 1967 decision of Vatican II to ease the character requirements for admission to the Seminary; in order to alleviate the shortage of Priests; and you have the present situation that has been playing our for more than 50 years.
The current Pontiff, a man of the left, makes the problem that much more difficult to contain and eradicate. Thank the Lord he’s 80 years old, not 48!!!

How do you explain that as a 50 year old man, I know four people who were sodomized before their 13th birthday, and they were all sodomized by different priests. Yet I know no other people in a pretty wide circle of friends that we sodomized by anyone.
