Poised on the boundary between Northern Liberties and Kensington, this sprawling 15-acre site was home to Schmidt's, Philadelphia's largest and most famous brewery, established in 1860. Schmidt's was the last survivor of Philadelphia's brewing industry, closing down in 1987 after over 125 years and leaving Philadelphia without a brewery for the first time in 300 years. Schmidt's Beer — and its tenacity — was a point of pride for all Philadelphians. The Schmidt's closure signaled once and for all the end of Philadelphia's industrial era. In 2000, a developer purchased the complex at sheriff's auction for almost two million dollars, and demolished all of its 26 buildings. The huge empty lot lay dormant for years as several plans for redeveloping the site were proposed, protested, and stalled. After years of delays and battles between residents and the developers, the Piazza at Schmidt's, a mixed-use complex, opened in May of 2009.

Had to google that. I always that it was Apres-Peux, which I incorrectly translated as “After (some) thought”.

I was wrong. Apropos. WTH that is supposed to mean.

And I took 4 years of French.

Hope they emptied the dumpster of rotting corpses and maggot infested Chinese noodles. Sounds like the Rio Olympics’ pool.

Just one small leak in that tarp, and these people will have wished they had never been born.

One of the things I love about FR is how we can learn from one another. I learn something here every time I drop in.

“One of the things I love about FR is how we can learn from one another. I learn something here every time I drop in.”

As long as some people can keep their anger and snarkiness down.

I really, really really prefer not to google everything. Sometimes I’ll come in here with a “I don’t know who it was, this person or that person” and the response I get is really angry and mean. I try to talk to you guys like you’re in the room with me.

Were I journalist or this forum was read by the whole world as a news source I would be far more careful.

Have a good sunday !

Yeah... that’s about right... except without the teeny tiny nozzle.

We just opened the damn thing up wide and let it rip.

Oh... and no Crocs or plumber’s crack either... :^)

I actually HAVE One of these openers, with Ortleib’s on it.

Belonged to my old man. It now holds a place of honor at MY bar.

SCHLITZ!!!!!!!!

Damn, Joe... you’re bringing back memories here....

Do you ever remember seeing pictures of the old water processing plant on Kelly Drive, right on Brewery Hill drive? It was near the Rock Tunnel. There’s a garden there now, but the water intake grates are still there on the river side. I’d imagine the pipe are still there too, underground.

They used to pull water from the river known as “Schuykill Punch” and send it through the water treatment plant to the Beer breweries up the hill.

Days gone by, brother....

“...Fished the Wissahickon Creek ...”

Me too. Know the area well.

Lifetime, indeed... Better days and better ways, for sure.
