Why Do People Say Muslim Now Instead of Moslem?
http://historynewsnetwork.org/ ^ | 7-8-02 | Yii-Ann Christine Chen

Is it Muslim or Moslem?

When Baby Boomers were children it was Moslem. The American Heritage Dictionary (1992) noted,"Moslem is the form predominantly preferred in journalism and popular usage. Muslim is preferred by scholars and by English-speaking adherents of Islam." No more. Now, almost everybody uses Muslim.

According to the Center for Nonproliferation Studies,"Moslem and Muslim are basically two different spellings for the same word." But the seemingly arbitrary choice of spellings is a sensitive subject for many followers of Islam. Whereas for most English speakers, the two words are synonymous in meaning, the Arabic roots of the two words are very different. A Muslim in Arabic means"one who gives himself to God," and is by definition, someone who adheres to Islam. By contrast, a Moslem in Arabic means"one who is evil and unjust" when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, Mozlem with a z.

For others, this spelling differentiation is merely a linguistic matter, with the two spellings a result of variation in transliteration methods. Both Moslem and Muslim are used as nouns. But some writers use Moslem when the word is employed as an adjective.

Journalists switched to Muslim from Moslem in recent years under pressure from Islamic groups. But the use of the word Moslem has not entirely ceased. Established institutions which used the older form of the name have been reluctant to change. The American Moslem Foundation is still the American Moslem Foundation (much as the NAACP is still the NAACP--the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). The journal The Moslem World--published by the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut--is still The Moslem World.

I like the old British “musselman” better because it reminds the listener that these people are like barnacles - once they cling to your society, you have a hell of a time getting them off.

I usually use "muzzie" - no caps just like when I spell out "allah"

Proper nouns are capitalized. It has nothing to do with respect. It is how English, our great language, is written.

IMO, not capitalizing these words shows disrespect as in (under your definition Drew) not accepting muzzie or allah as being part of English proper. Intentionally ignoring.

This sounds somewhat like trying to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs. No one knows for sure what the vowel(s) sounds were/are in their language. Except maybe for cases of pronunciations of Egyptian names or places in other languages of the time.

This is a great opportunity.

One of Islam’s tricks is to pretend to be monolithic, that they are all equal in their religion, and cannot be subdivided into different camps.

So what if others start referring to “good Muslims” and “bad Mozlems”? And to emphasize the point by using the “Mozlems” spelling?

mozlems
moslems
mohammedans
musslemans
mahometans
muzzies

Works for me, since Islam as a dreadful cancer upon the face of the earth. I also do not capitalize the word “cancer”.

Why would you? It is not a proper noun.

Yeah. The only thing monolithic is their thinking pattern.

dear drew,

Whyen I learned about the saracen/mohammedans in Junior high School, it WAS taught to use a lower case letter at the beginning of the term, as it was as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had written about them!

Now, 51 years later, they themselves have proved to not be worth an upper case letter to denote those dogs.

dear disndat,

‘black cube of Saturn’, eh?

Kinda difficult to fathom since ‘Saturn’ was a Roman deity, and ‘the cube’ was something from Pythagoras, both of which, if held to the lens of mohammedanism, would seem to be something ‘anti-allah0ish, would it not?

Dear Fred Nerz,

Thank you for your gracious reply. I thank you for citing the references and providing links. They are truly interesting and valuable.

I see your point about the word which disndat wrote. (God vs Allah) I understand the distinction you make. I am not mindlessly equating the two.

If you truly are interested in what I think, this is why I hold the view that I do:

I hold the belief that that our Father God loves ALL of His children and wishes to reach them wherever they are. He has the power to do this at any time. (I affirm strongly at this time that I claim Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Without Him I am lost.)

I think it is true that Islam went terribly sideways from what I believe God intended to release through it to a VERY ignorant people, and that it is true that Mohammed made very grave errors in his expounding of this theology. In history it has always been the stratagem of the forces of darkness to invade that which is intended to be good. We have seen this over and over again in nations and religions and other institutions throughout history. We have often seen how sometimes a person means well, has a good start, does some actual good, then at some point, they fail their test, and then became a turncoat working for the Enemy - whether they intended it or even realize it.

I think it is true that almost immediately what I believe was intended to be a very high teaching and religion was invaded by those forces that DID revert it to that very worship of darkness - Venus - to which you refer.

I am NOT in any way seeking to persuade you, but to simply state what I believe to be the truth, I know many here would vehemently disagree with that position, and I do not seek to persuade them either. I do not equate the worship of the primitive gods with the 3 in One of the the Judaic and Christian traditions. I am taking advantage of this forum to simply state my belief in a calm, ordered way. (It is always a joy to be able to visit about such matters with informed and fervent people such as yourself.)

However, imho there is enough of a gleaning left of what was intended to be released through Mohammed to allow a soul truly seeking the True God that they can find Him. I have seen how there is a mystic tradition within Islam (the so called “Whirling Dervishes”, for example.) Their writings express the same concepts as what mystics in the Christan and Judaic mystical traditions say about God. The mystics are those who have sought and found, with great difficulty and trial, the direct experience and energy and power of the True Lord God.

Again I state, I am not seeking to persuade you, but am simply citing my own strongly held belief.

I DO wish you well. No sarcasm here to that. I again state that on this point we may need to agree to disagree, for we ARE true FRiends! - and i desire to keep it that way! To God is the glory for all Good things.

God bless you abundantly,
texokie

I use mohammedan.

It has the virtue of being accurate and driving liberals and mohammedans out of their little gourds.
