Pretty simple. Android orphans devices. A 3 or 4 year iPhone (if such exists among the zombies) will likely accept and run a “latest update” os/security patches. It may be a bit sluggish by comparison, but it would most likely run.

Android, and more to the point the phone manufacturers, appear to tie the update capability to latest model and service provider, and the service providers update or end of life schedules. Anyone walking around with a 3 year android smartphone on a large provider contract is fighting a deluge of spam to keep his current plan and not upgrade.

Buy an android tablet not associated with a phone plan, and it will likely be un-upgradeable in a year.
