The Associated Press, which operates the longest-running college football poll, published a top 25 Tuesday that ranks the nations best programs over the polls 80-year existence (1936). The No. 1 team? Its Ohio State, the program that has been ranked in the poll for more weeks than any other team (852), including the most at No. 1 (105). Michigan (No. 7), Michigan State (No. 19), Wisconsin (No. 24) and Iowa (No. 25) also land on the list, as do current Big Ten members Nebraska (No. 6) and Penn State (No. 12), both of which experienced their best years pre-Big Ten. According to the AP release, the formula to rank the teams considered poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points). Heres a look at the complete poll: 1. Ohio State (Total appearances: 852; No. 1 ranking 105; Championships: 5) 2. Oklahoma 3. Notre Dame 4. Alabama 5. Southern Cal 6. Nebraska (Total appearances: 717; No. 1 ranking 72; Championships: 4) 7. Michigan (Total appearances: 806; No. 1 ranking 34; Championships: 2) 8. Texas 9. Florida State 10. Florida 11. LSU 12. Penn State (Total appearances: 589; No. 1 ranking 19; Championships: 2) 13. Miami 14. Tennessee 15. Georgia 16. Auburn 17. UCLA 18. Texas A&M 19. I-OWE
OSU, like the other big teams, mean MONEY.
Ohio State (and Oregon State) are those other OSU’s to me.
Oklahoma State will always be #1 in my book no matter how many times they break my heart (and I lost count sometime back in the 80’s).
Go Pokes!
I-O!!
The AP poll has always been slanted in favor of the Big 10. I think it was even worse in the 50s and 60s.
What?! The original Monsters of the Midway don’t even get a spot after providing the world with the first Heisman Trophy winner EVER? Shameful.
OH my and roll tide. Alabama has had 16 national championships.
Polls don’t mean squat. Nebraska has won or have been awarded 14 national championships.
Eff the Buckeyes
No team, other than Notre Dame, ever benefitted more from media bias.
For the record: I don’t blame the meda; They like what they know. For MORE years, more media has known Ohio State than any other team.
That doesn’t make them right.
This list needs to be formatted as a list, vertically.
Plus it needs to actually include all of the list!
Lots of has been’s on that list.
Give me something fresh!

Hey...where is Montana State on the list? :o)
Alabama: 11
Notre Dame: 8
Oklahoma: 7
USC: 6
Ohio State: 6
End of argument.
As a disclaimer: I am not an Alabama supporter.
Considering the relative isolation of Lincoln NE, and the difficulty in recruiting the best out-of-state talent, the Huskers continue to have one of the greatest College Football programs of all time, and I’m happy to see this article!
Without question, Memorial Stadium in Lincoln is an incredible, awe-inspiring place to play in, and it has the most consecutive sell-outs by far in College Football history. Husker fans are forever, and are considered to be some of the most knowledgeable fans in America. And the Husker fight songs and Marching Band rank very high up in these type polls.
One day, hopefully soon, we’ll regain our national powerhouse status. Meantime, we’ll always be in the hunt, have some great players, play some great games, and be a first-class program. And not to quibble, but he have 5 National Championships, (not 4 as several stated), 3 Heisman Trophy winners, 9 or 10 Outland Trophy winners, hundreds of All-Americans, hundreds of NFL draft choices, scores upon scores of current and former NFL greats, and the most Academic All-Americans in College Football.
And each year, other sports within the Husker athletic programs also excel. This season, the Husker Women’s Volleyball team are National Champions! Good stuff!
I am a proud Husker, I bleed Big Red, and I also admire the other legendary programs in the Top Ten on this list.
“OH my and roll tide. Alabama has had 16 national championships.”
Exactly. This is another example of the Big Whatever conference media bias.
It’s hilarious though. ROLL TIDE!!
