The winner of this year's Miss Teen USA has admitted her mistake after being slammed for a series of racially offensive posts sent from her Twitter account
Karlie Hay, 18, of Tomball, Texas, was given the crown Saturday at a lavish ceremony in Las Vegas. But shortly after the pageant ended, a Twitter user posted a screenshot of tweets that included the N-word, that Hay had sent to some of her friends in January 2014 and July 2013.
Soon, many had taken to Twitter to express their concern that somebody who had posted racially offensive sentiments had just been billed as the ultimate role model for young woman across America. Director Xavier Burgin, who was one of the first to share the screenshot, tweeted: 'You can win Miss Teen USA, you can handle the extra (justified scrutiny) for your racist behavior' and later posted: 'And @MissTeenUSA needs to address this and revoke Karlie Hay's win, or set the precedent racists are welcome to their event.' He later wrote: 'Here are a few excuses that we will hear: That was three years ago, ppl change!, so you can say N***er but we can't?, She's a child!' Kamie Crawford, a former Miss Teen USA, quickly called her out, writing: 'If u win any pageant - first things first. Clean up ur page. Cus if ur under 21 u shouldn't b drinking & if ur WHITE the n word ain't yo word!'
While Sam White wrote: 'No excuse for using a word whose only impact coming from white ppl is harm. And @MissTeenUSA is a role model?' Director Xavier Burgin tweeted: 'You can win Miss Teen USA, you can handle the extra (justified scrutiny) for your racist behavior'
