SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- More than a fifth of California's recycling redemption centers have closed in the last year, stripping consumers of easy access to recycling and limiting their ability to collect the deposits they made when purchasing bottles and cans.
More closures may follow, as the state's subsidy payment program, meant to help centers survive market fluctuations, has failed to keep up with rapid decreases in the value of plastic, glass and aluminum. The payment formula, advocates say, is too slow to cover the real costs of recycling.

Where I live all residences receive recycling bins. There is a long list of things that one CANNOT put in the bins. Among those on the list is plastic!
The patients are running the asylum!
Everything government touches turns to crap. Let the market dictate recycling.
When I use tap water to rinse out the bottom of the popcan so the recycle bin doesn’t get sticky, do I waste more than I save?
My first trip to California, I was shocked at the stench in a rest area ... composting toilets. I actually like California, despise what has happened to it politically, though.
There really is no tangible market for recycled materials. Most (>90%) ends up in a landfill as a result. But, it makes tree huggers feel superior.
The ONLY items that are cost effective to recycle are metals, specifically aluminum.

I remember seeing a Penn & Teller "Bull$hit" special on recycling.
They were almost apologetic, because they thought that recycling DID make sense.
Nope.
It's a BIG waste of time and money and provides absolutely no "benefit", particularly to mother earth.
You could make a *weak* argument about aluminum cans, as the homeless can pick them up and get some cash.
AFAIK, it is still CHEAPER to make the cans from raw materials than from recycled ones.
plus you burn a lot of gasoline and rubber up.... driving your $2.78 of bottles to the recycle centre
Whatever doesn’t burn in my barrel gets put in someones dumpster.
I only have about 1-2 plastic grocery bags/mo of glass and cans to get rid of.
They passed them out here about a year ago. Hubby called them and told them to come pick it up, we’re not sorting your garbage for you so you can make money. They did. Lol
Yet we are still charged 5 cents per can which we are supposed to get back when we take our cans to the
non existent
recycling center.
They take a nickel and pay .003 back.
They want you to donate it to the blue can.
Not to mention the folks who WASH their recyclables in hot soapy water, and remove the stickers from glass jars.
That HAS to be a net loss when it comes to energy expended, and water wasted.
Correct. CA government increasingly keeps for itself the container tax, collected at the point of sale, when there is no easy way for Joe Sixpack to turn in the containers for a refunding of the container tax.
This scheme also is bad for recycling, with bigger landfills from more discarded recyclables.
Effectively, the state gov benefits from reduced recycling and more pollution.
The Rats are thus proven perverse liars, once more.
Think of it as the reverse Midas touch, except crap has a value as fertilizer.
