Somebody close to Donald Trump's campaign is apparently leaking something very unhelpful.
Needless to say, having rumors out there that you thought about dumping your vice presidential pick 12 hours after his name started leaking is a bad thing. If you're Mike Pence, you just affixed your brand to Trump's for the next four months -- and perhaps the rest of your career -- and the botched handling of the VP rollout has now culminated in this. Not exactly a confidence-booster.
If anything, this leak is just the latest proof of how poorly the whole thing has been handled. And that poor handling, in turn, makes the rumor seem quite plausible.
Also making it believable: Basically everything the Trump campaign said on Thursday. Here's a sampling (with a big assist from The Post's Robert Costa). All of this came after Pence's name emerged as the likely pick late Thursday morning.

Yeah, but you don’t teach discipline by chopping heads off... at least not to the affected party.
The media is scared of Pence.
My guess is it was Newt who planted this. I know many here think Newt is God, but the fact is he is a very self serving man, always has been. He has never gotten over the fact that he still doesn’t get the credit for his time in DC.
Anyone who is out there talking to the press everyday has an agenda. This smells like Newt and it stinks!!
A, I don’t for a nanosecond believe Manafort is a leaker, and B, I don’t believe a word Erickson says.
I can believe Lewandowski started the rumor to undercut Manafort. I like Lewandowski a lot, but I wouldn’t put it past him to bear a grudge against Manafort.
Trump is a big boy. He can pick and choose anyone he wants and not feel he has to answer to anyone.
There is no credibility to this story. I don’t favor Pence but I don’t believe this story.
One of the things I learned early in my advertising career was the importance of claims substantiation--i.e. if you didn't have the test data to back up your claim you can't say it in an advertisement.
Little did I know that those in the news-editorial sequence, who were taught to report facts, would go on to be a part of a cadre of paid professional liars, rivalled in their ability only by politicians.
If we ever get to the point of civil war, the first ones to hang should be the liars who mold public opinion and purposely hide the truth behind their liberal agenda. And, swinging from the nearest lamppost next to them should be the professional politicos who have served themselves instead of this great republic.
WOW! This Calls For Maximium BS Detection! |
I suggest you familiarize yourself with Pence’s views on Homosexuality, Abortion and Religious Freedom.
He has made all the right enemies on all three of these issues.
I live in Indiana.
We have seen this state experience a boom in employment and business investment under Pence, partially because of his support for Right to Work laws and tax reform.
Indiana is currently operating in the black.
This as taxes have gone down.
Comparing Pence to the Bushes is specious at best.
.
I so look forward to Obama and Hillary for receiving the same scrutiny as Trump.
Trump could announce he uses Charmin toilet paper and the media would go ape crazy because he doesn’t use Angel Soft.
Already our local rag comment section is claiming Pence is a rabid racist who hates women, gays, minorities, LGBT, puppies, orangutans , spotted owls, trees, and dolphins. Obviously because he’s a Christian, right?
“Pence as VP. Which is believable, thanks to Trump, Pearls Before Swine wrote:
How could he dump him before he appointed him?”
Trying to emulate the f’in success of John f’in Kerry.
I think Newt would have been a much better pick. The little I've read about Pence indicates that that he caves to political pressure and political correctness.
From the National Review:
Indiana governor Mike Pence is now calling for legislation clarifying that his states new Religious Freedom Restoration Act will not give any business the right to deny services to anyone. This is a craven capitulation. The act as passed allows courts to do a balancing test. The clarification seriously threatens the newly created balance. It would tilt the playing field away from those who would assert religious objections to various commercial activities. RFRA or no, those objections are often valid.
From the Washington Examiner:
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was known as a stalwart fighter for limited government principles as a member of the House of Representatives (one of few Republicans to have voted against President Bush's Medicare prescription drug plan and No Child Left Behind law). But on Tuesday, he betrayed taxpayers when he embraced an expansion of Medicaid through President Obama's healthcare law.
The much vaunted Dump Trump movement is history (went out with barely a whimper), so now theyve gotta make something else up.
Egg-zactly!
As does Newt. He’s already backtracked on his Muslim comments and “clarified” them. Pence is a solid if unspectacular choice, but we should all look at Trump’s selection and see the CEO in action.
Trump sets the strategy and vision, but he has little to no experience in passing legislation, and probably doesn’t care one bit about the nuts and bolts. He told us he was going to get a “political” person to help him with the legislative part of the job, and he got about the best person available to do that.
Newt was a master legislator but is undisciplined. and weekly, Newt would be stirring up another controversy. Newt is the absolute worst person you could have had for VP because he would view his role as a co-Presidency. Christie would be better than Newt, but you already have 1 executive in Trump, why would you need two?
The basic facts are that most of the GOP outright sucks. It is full of cheap labor hacks, pro amnesty shills, and Chamber of Commerce sell outs. There is nobody out there like Trump otherwise they would be nominee and not Trump. So Trump is the CEO and Pence will be the COO. Pence was the least worst option that perfectly fulfilled Trump’s greatest weakness. Be thankful you just saw a great CEO make a pick that will help him implement his agenda for the good of the country. Trump also learned from business that the person who beats you in a deal or steals one from you may be the next person you partner with, which is why he could care less that Pence endorsed Cruz.
BOL!
That analysis was masterful; thank you.
Being “right” on the issues is meaningless after Cruz’s massive fake out as a “Christian Conservative”.
What matters is whether or not Pence is a Globalist.
Globalism cancels out his positioning on social issues.
This is true, but Pence was also a Congressman for 10 years, so he knows legislation. As an added bonus, the Executive experience helps as well. About the best possible pick Trump could make given the options weighed against his criteria.
