After Breitbart News reported that three refugees in Vermont have been diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB) over the past seven months, an official with the Vermont Department of Health admitted that a total of fifteen refugees in the Green Mountain State were diagnosed with active TB between 2003 and 2015.

Since only 6,300 refugees have arrived in Vermont over the past twenty-five years, these new statistics reveal a third-world level of active TB among the refugees currently residing in the Green Mountain State.

Between 2003 and 2015, the state has recorded 77 cases of active tuberculosis in Vermont. Of those, the Health Department says just 15 were diagnosed in refugees. 26 of the cases were in U.S.-born individuals. The remainder were in people who fell into other categories, like people living in Vermont on student or work visas.

I think I will spend summer vacation elsewhere.

I wonder if the 26 cases of TB in U.S. born individuals were Americans who caught TB from “refugees.”

Way back when Ellis Island was the gateway for immigrants to the U.S., they checked them for diseases and wouldn’t let people with TB etc. in. Now measles, TB and what looked like polio are re-appearing.

Thank you - that is my concern also.
But what is really concerning is whether there are increased numbers of the medication-resistant TB.

Understand a single person with active TB means that everybody who came in close contact with that individual will likely need a year of anti tubercular medications and those with any contact need to have a TB skin test. Imagine in a school the number of people who would need to be tested and treated if only one of these active TB cases were a student. More frightening would be if even one of these active TB cases were not detected.

It is VERY expensive to cure someone of active TB. They must take an antibiotic for several months and a health worker must physically administer and observe the patient taking the dose in person.

I love Chobani yogurt but it has been placed on my do not buy list. Their Muslim owner is importing as many Muslims as he can and is lobbying for more.

Blood of Tyrants :" It is VERY expensive to cure someone of active TB.

As I recall, the expense of an active TB case is over $17,000. per year, not including the salary of the health worker.
As I recall, the expense of an active 'medication-resistant TB' is in excess of $200,000. per year in medication alone.
Given the contagious nature of both forms of TB, I think that it would pay Vermont to establish its own form of Ellis Island medical isolation,
just to assure the residents that it is unlikely that there would be any further contagion among its state population.
