[Vanity] Gun Control Issue

Posted on 07/10/2016 5:28:06 AM PDT by 2nd Amendment

I've been thinking about the serious issue of gun control lately. Here is my dilemma. I have a nice AR that has about an 8-1/2 lb trigger pull. I'm having trouble controlling the size of groups. What aftermarket trigger do you recommend? I know a lot of politicians and media have been discussing a lot about gun control but I can't seem to recall anyone addressing my concerns.

For about 100 bucks, you can get a high quality trigger. You need to decide if you want a single stage or 2 stage trigger. whatever you decide, you will be happier if all your rifles have a similar trigger. Jumping from a single stage to a 2 stage and back on a regular basis is an exercise in frustration.

As far as a 2 stage, Rock River is quality equipment, and not expensive. For single stage, the stock trigger can be adjusted to give good service, but a drop in assy will give a cleaner break.

A 2” 100yd group on a stock rifle with non-premium ammo is quite good, and you might not see measurable improvement with just a trigger change.

The Wilson Combat 2 stage is excellent!

I’m just about committed to the JP trigger control group. I’ve watched the video numerous times and am anxious to give it a try. I have a retired machinist friend who has all the tools and has installed AR triggers before. It could be a wonderful afternoon installing a trigger and addressing “diversity” issues as well as reloading 500 or so rounds with H335 powder and 55FMJ bullets.

If you don’t have it, change out to a free float hand guard. That does wonders for tightening groups.

Geissele SSA or SSA-E.
Puts it at 3.5lbs on the second stage.

Your groups are fine. The reason for the heavy trigger pull? Neanderthal Jarheads, and Dogfaces need to learn the art of the trigger squeeze...a heavy trigger is the only way to learn.

My trigger is the same, and it was the same with my M-16. Never change something that works.

With good reloads, my Gen II Recon shot .43”, .47”, and .74” at 100 yds after I installed a hypertouch EDT3 from Joe Bob outfitters. It would shoot about 1” before the trigger swap.

I have a CMC single stage 3.5lb pull on mine. It’s crisp, breaks clean and has greatly improved the groups on my AR. I got a deal on mine at $180, but it sells for around $225. They also have a two stage available if you prefer a little travel before the break.

Maybe also look into a different barrel with more lands and grooves ...

Heavier bullets require a "faster" twist rate to stabilize the bullet. A 1:9 twist is pretty standard for bullets up to 69gr.

I like a cheap AK trigger that slaps your finger silly. Ouch.

Actually I’m being a little rhetorical, here. My PSA stainless freedom barrel with a 1:7 twist is quite acceptable @1-1/2” groups. I just don’t like the long, hard, gritty trigger pull (unlike SgtBob and Ermey!)I just want a nice soft, liberal trigger pull like on my bolt action hunting rifles.

A good roundup/review of available drop in triggers.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/04/jeremy-s/ar-15-drop-in-trigger-roundup/

I assume you don’t want too much of a hair trigger on something that is essentially a battle rifle/self-defense carbine.

For a tight shot group, remember the simple fact that shooting is a lot like golfing, except instead of golf clubs you are using firearms. And instead of using golf balls you are using bullets. And instead of hitting balls on a golf course with other golfers, you are shooting at the golfers.
