I guess the terms explosive and area are relative terms. You seem to favor small explosions and tiny areas as in a fired bullet impacting a tiny target area. But I see no issue enlarging the explosion and widening the area so long it is only effecting the perp.
But, what if? The perp had a remote detonator for a bomb in a crowded stadium but he had two hostages. Would it be right to blow up all 3 in order to save the stadium?
Now area explosives are a slippery slope.
And I just argued with myself and lost.

Take your beat up on the cops crap elsewhere. Would you be happier if he would have been shot? This isn't criticism of the method or execution of a punk. This is a matter of something far more important -- extracting crucial information -- like a possible ACTIVE NETWORK. (although, we can expect this guy's home, computer and FB pages to be contaminated by The Regime as usual.)
THIS is why terrorists in the ME were not summarily executed (back in the sane days); They were pumped for valuable info that prevents other extreme loss of life.

Its idiotic to think you could capture a man with a battle rifle with tasers and water hoses.I missed the equipment list where that's all the Dallas Police are issued.

I was wondering whether there was any reasonable option to deploy some sort of gas to disable the perp instead of using an explosive.

If you accept that the police can kill a barricaded individually who shoots at them o an off, then it doesn’t much matter how they kill him. I would prefer if it were me to do the method which easts endangers the cops and innocent people.
If there are no hiatgse around him, blow the m——r f-—— up.
To: Rinnwald
The guy killed five people who were peacefully doing their jobs. They weren't after his 2nd amendment rights.
I understand your point though.

Guns are tools, bombs are tools and radio-controlled vehicles are tools.
The only thing that matters is how and why they are used.
I see no problem in this circumstance.

Based on what I read about this shooting, the sniper was rocking body armor, so basically, snipers would be useless. And then everybody would have engaged in an orgy of "disturbed" breast-beating about how Dallas cops are so ineffective. When it comes to being police in the USA today, one can't win for losing with some folks, and that is what I find to be "disturbing"!

he needed to be taken aliveUnder anything near normal circumstances, yes. But if they feared that he had remote control means to set off bombs, I don't see that they had any choice.

On the one hand, I would have enjoyed seeing them use an RPG instead. Or a claymore, as the mental madman was clearly a danger to much more than just himself. On the other hand, if they had approached him with a flame-thrower, only a true madman would have chosen to not surrender in preference to being suddenly changed into a large chunk of charcoal.
Among other choices, but why is anyone attempting to monday-morning-quarterback this? Its over. Its done.
Nice straw man, using the visceral reaction against this man's crimes to downplay or approve the police using military weapons. Do you want your local police using RPGs and Claymores?
And it's not done. Appropriate police equipment and tactics is an ongoing discussion.

"The Second MOVE incident." Remember it well, was living just off City Avenue at the time. Wilson Goode, the black mayor was responsible. He was trying to kill
this guy:
and wound up destroying both the MOVE tenement and 65 other buildings.

I am sickened that they negotiated with this black panther sewer turd.
I am also sickened that they did not use napalm or better yet a WHITE phosphorus grenade.
Forgive me if the above response was too timid.
