Microsoft's Windows 10 nagware goes FULL SCREEN in final push ("Sorry to interrupt, but...")
The Register ^ | Jul 1, 2016 | Shaun Nichols

As the Windows 10 free upgrade period draws to a close, Microsoft is stepping up its operating system's nagware to full-screen takeovers.

The Redmond software giant confirmed today it will start showing dark blue screens urging people to install the latest version of Windows. The full-screen ads will pop up on Windows 7 and 8.1 desktops from now until July 30, when the free upgrade period ends.

"This notification is a reminder that the Window 10 free upgrade offer ends on July 29, 2016. Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Windows 10 before the offer expires," Microsoft said.

"You can choose to upgrade directly from the notification, dismiss the notification permanently, or choose to be reminded later."

Windows 10 has its benefits but not everyone is willing to stomach the force-fed upgrade. This week a Reg hack found out the hard way that latest Microsoft OS had knackered his laptop's mic and webcam, preventing him from using Skype properly.

Microsoft says users who have selected the "do not notify me again" option or who have manually disabled notifications through registry key settings will not see the update, as will those who have previously uninstalled Windows 10, have had a failed installation, or don't have PCs that can support the new OS.

This comes as Microsoft has been widely criticized for forcing the Windows 10 upgrade on folks and popping up migration screens at wildly inappropriate times. It's hoped that after the free period is over, and you'll have to pay for Windows 10, Microsoft will dial down its efforts to cram its software onto people's machines.

I’m looking forward to the bitching on FR by people who didn’t upgrade during the free upgrade period and then will have to pay for an OS license.

Microsoft is in the business of making money. They want you to upgrade to Windows 10 to improve their distribution numbers. This is your last chance to upgrade for free. After the end of the month, you’re shelling out $100+ to upgrade.

Their tactics are a questionable and ethically gray, but it’s no different than the advertisement-ridden bullshit we wade through everyday on the Internet.

Thank you for all your good info.

I am not sure if I *activated* it — hmmm [maybe I didn’t]

I surf a little, very little, try to keep my head down !

But I have what I heard is a very good anti-bug pgm: ESET.

Will that keep all the bugs away ?

if I may ask another Q: Is it wise to use Acronis or such, rather than the MSWin backup, restore?

I have a 4 year old Dell, Win 7 Pro, 64 bit OS. I decided to do the upgrade, and MS Win 10 scan said it was all OK. For about three days it ran well, then I had blue screen crashes - 7 over 5 days.

I had lots of advice about drivers and BIOS upgrades, but I just reverted back to 7. I’m not wasting time playing lab rat to some snot-nosed college boys in Redmond.

Microsoft wants to add fluff and crap to old systems to make them appeal to idiots; they don’t take care to handle older software like drivers.

Win 10 offers nothing (for me) thats any better than Win 7; I don’t need it, don’t want it.

When I buy a new PC it’ll be state of the art - probably Ubuntu. Microsoft is very amateurish, unprofessional, in their software development practices.

And I'm looking forward to the ones who bitch when they are infected by malware and system instability, after bragging that they never 'bother' with updates and take pride in ensuring that automatic updates are turned off.

Of course, it'll be all Microsoft's fault...

It IS Microsoft’s fault. The only reason I don’t upgrade is because of the the tracking software that phones home to MS. That is entirely THEIR fault.

What he (Tom) said is right on.

I've used Acronis for years also, and swear by it. Not once have had to swear at it, which is saying a lot for ANY software.

And it has absolutely saved my butt a couple of times where Windows backup was totally useless.

Absolutely. Win backup blows. I reimage every few months to ensure a clean machine. I was hijacked once (embarrassed to say) - popped my restore CD in, restored from separate drive and !voila! - back in biz.

No big deal.

I will hazard a guess...

Windows "Home" and similar versions have the most trouble with the nagging. I run Win7 either Pro or Ultimate, saw a couple of nags early on, then I wiped out GWX and its kindred KBs and haven't been troubled since, except for the SysTray icon which I studiously ignore. But I have clients and other users who insist on saving a few bucks with "Home" variants.

So perhaps you and your friends are, like me, running one of the upscale versions also?

The accurate answer is that NOTHING keeps ALL the bugs away. The best any anti-bug software can do is react when a new bug appears. Some do try to predict behaviorally, with so-so results and typically awful system loading (performance slowdown).

I don't personally know anything about ESET.

Sounds like me :-)

The reason I'm using Win10 on some of my systems now is that I have to, for work reasons. That said, it's okay, it allows me to work, and (see link above) Classic Shell has saved my sanity.

Butlerweave ... it is a word that has Surrender Embedded and Assumed all wrapped up in one little neat package.

Do you (Butlerweave) ever resume from “Assume” the position?

Yep. Over the years Acronis images have allowed me not just disaster recovery/restore, but also transitions of hard drives, from HD to SSD, and so forth. Trivial process that used to be hellacious.

These days almost all of my Windows installs are in VMs. Of the two that aren't:

I've read that Acronis can image those correctly, and (hopefully) restore them correctly, but I haven't tried yet.

Summer projects...
