Mystery file in preview build hints at Windows 10 subscriptions
ZDNet ^ | June 30, 2016 | Ed Bott

Buried in the System32 folder of build 14376, alongside 590 other .exe files, is a file whose name is guaranteed to raise eyebrows: UpgradeSubscription.exe. That file has been part of other recent preview builds, but has managed to remain under the radar until now.

In the file's properties, it's described as the Windows Upgrade to Subscription Tool, and its date and time stamp corresponds to other administrative tools in the same build.

I’ll just keep my computer offline at that point.

Windows APS run on Linux machines. Install win 7 or earlier as a virtual machine, then install the APS into windows like u always did. Just get advice for setting up the virtual machine so u can save files and have them available to you on the HD even if u aren’t in windows VM.

Thanks PrairieLady2! I’m currently going the opposite direction - I’m running Virtualbox on a Win-7 laptop hosting a Hackintosh VM, two flavors of Linux (Mint and Ubuntu) Win-XP (for legacy stuff) Win-7, and Win-10 Vms. This allows me to work cross-platform.

I don’t think that I’ve ‘owned’ any MS OS since my initial purchase of Dos 3.1 considering all of the ‘upgrades’... 3.1~3.5 and then on to Windows.

I was quite content with XP until it and my old Gateway wouldn’t seem to accept any new versions of Firefox.

At least the new CPU’s aren’t costing $2500 to replace. My current Dell was (in comparison) a meager $500. (probably equivalent to my first Tandy in current dollars?)

Am considering getting another one to load Linux on, perhaps also an Apple OS (I understand that is possible?). Even the refurb Apples are expensive in comparison.

On another thought... I wonder how many of MS X numbers are actually users versus downloads onto machines that haven’t been installed? (I deleted at least a dozen from my update list until using GWX).

I still keep my Gateway ready to use, programs and files that I want to keep and use. Wish that I still had my ALR — it had a GREAT word processing program, basic CAD and others...* and also the printers. Oh, the printers... dot matrix with ribbons, narrow and wide paper (green and white spaces).

It’s bad enough people have to put up with that protection money model when they “own” real estate. Now software? Forget it. I switched to Linux mint several months ago and do not miss Windows at all.

Windows 10 is SpyWare. The government is in cahoots with Microsoft to infect all computers.

Windows 10 "Subscriptions" make a stealth appearance... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to upchuck and Dalberg-Acton for the thread and ping.

Subscriptions have always been the plan in Windows 10. So this isn't much of a "surprise" really, just the first indications that what was foretold is coming to pass.

I already have subscribed to Adobe Acrobat DC, just so I could have the lates, supported version of Acrobat. I don’t need to subscribe to Win 10 too.

That would not surprise me. Or Microsoft, et al. just want to have a giant botnet for G*d knows what.

I’ve kept my copies of Windows 7. Hell, I even have a disc for Windows 2000.

That’s for the desktop. I have a MacbookPro that’s the “work” machine.
