Skeletons and Gold Coins Found in Pompeii Shop

Archaeologists excavating a shop on the outskirts of Pompeii have found four skeletons, several gold coins, and a necklace pendant, according to an Associated Press report. The skeletons belonged to young people who died in the back of the shop when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. There was an oven in the shop that the archaeologists believe may have been used to make bronze objects. There is evidence that the shop was targeted by looters seeking treasure after the eruption, but they apparently missed the gold coins and the gold-leaf-foil, flower-shaped pendant. Archaeologists have been excavating a second shop as well, though they are unsure what its purpose was. The dig has also turned up a fourth-century B.C. tomb containing an adult skeleton surrounded by six black vases.

Interesting that ancient "robber holes" can still be detected during an excavation. Some of the formerly fine homes of Pompeii had traces of ancient excavated shafts, presumably by or on behalf of the owner (or someone else familiar with the houses) looking for, and perhaps finding, items of value.

So interesting. Poor people. What a legacy for future generations to come by to see.

Grave robbers, do they ever stop and take a minute to consider?

think of all the great treasure hordes of ancient Egyptian pharaohs lost during antiquity to grave robbers.

compared to most of the rest buried in the Valley of the Kings, King Tut’s tomb was minor and not particularly noteworthy, considering he was an unimportant boy king who died young. just image what Ramses II or other major rulers had stashed away in their tombs. we’ll never know, because those tombs were robbed millennia ago and those golden artifacts were melted down and used for other things.

such a shame.

I’m waiting for them to be able to read the libraries they’ve found there and at Herculenaium.

Grave robbers: Stealing from posterity for immediate acquisition. Today we call them Congressmen.

It’s really heartbreaking because the history they stole is the most valuable treasure of all.
