Zika Is Spreading Fast In Puerto Rico, Could Reach 25% Of Population

About 1.1% of blood donors in Puerto Rico are testing positive for the Zika virus. The blood screening suggests that about 25% of the island’s population will catch Zika this year.

The Zika virus is spreading “rapidly” in Puerto Rico and now likely afflicts 2% of the island’s population with active infections, public health officials reported on Friday, based on tests of blood donors.

At current infection rates, one-quarter of the island’s 3.5 million people will eventually acquire the mosquito-borne illness, U.S. CDC officials said. Current estimates are that 1% to 13% of babies born to women infected with Zika during pregnancy will suffer from microcephaly, a severe shrunken brain and skull syndrome.

“In coming months, thousands of pregnant women in Puerto Rico will catch Zika,” CDC director Thomas Frieden said at a briefing for reporters. “Dozens or hundreds of infected babies will be born with microcephaly.”

Since April 3, donation centers on the island have detected 68 blood donors out of 12,777 — or about 0.5% — who had active Zika infections. The highest incidence was 1.1% of donors for the latest week of reporting, and the numbers have increased in the last month, the CDC’s Matthew Kuehnert said. The blood donor increase mirrors separate reports of pregnant women in Puerto Rico infected with Zika: 191 pregnant women have tested positive this week, way up from nine last week.

One U.S. Rep in my area, a doctor, has sharply condemned any travel to South America or any country with a significant infection rate. This includes travel to Rio in Brazil for the Olympics. He says it’s insanity to even think about going (and coming back.)

Is it exclusively a female disease? Because I’ve never heard of a man contracting it.

silverleaf :" Imagine a mosquito borne disease that could depopulate much of the earth if women must choose to not have children"

Imagine 20 % of a nations Gross Domestic Product (GDP),in this case healthcare being nationalized, and determined to be a "tax"
to be supporting for all those who can't afford healthcare expenses.
At the same time ever enlarging the scope of what healthcare expenses it will cover (ie: surgeries, medications, sex changes, etc.)
Eventually , it will lead to national financial bankruptcy since eventually, you will find expenses will exceed income.
Eventually, you run out of other people's money through taxation.
While Puerto Rico is not a state , I believe it remains a legal 'protectorate' of the United States .

gigster :" Is it exclusively a female disease?

No , not exclusively a female disease .
There is evidence of a case in Texas where a male who contracted the virus on his travels, exchanged his bodily fluids with his homosexual partner who then contracted the virus , also.
In many cases the virus affects the developing fetus with severe neurological, developmental, and physical problems.
There is evidence that the virus may remain viable and undetected for as much as 60 days or more in the male sexual gonads.

Yes men get it and transmit it sexually for weeks or months ( maybe longer) after infection

It's amazing that mosquitoes can carry the Zika virus, but they can't carry the AIDS virus. Simply amazing...
