Who paid the taxes of about $6,000 on the $15,000?

It’s a communism experiment to determine the minimum money someone can exist on. That way they can take the rest, cause they need it more than you do.

It’s not ideal — but it’s probably better than the current system.

The current social-welfare system punishes work. If you’re on social assistance, in social housing, send your children to subsidized day care, receive subsidized health care insurance, etc. etc. you may face an effective marginal tax rate of over 100%. I.e. for every dollar you earn working; more than a dollar is clawed back by government. You can see the results of that perverse system all around you.

The main (theoretical) benefit of the guaranteed basic income approach is that you can get ahead by working. The additional income would be taxed — but, the marginal rate wouldn’t be much different than it is now.

In other words — giving *everyone* a guaranteed income would create a lot *less dependency* than the current perverse system.

Where’s he going to get room and board after he spends all the money on alcohol and drugs?

which wants to set up a slew of lotteries to see how basic income might work around the world.

About as well as the welfare state has worked the last 40 years, but with even worse consequences.

This will be the best-case scenario test, where there is no bureaucracy to suck the life out of everything and no pedantic and overcomplicated participation rules to game.

The entire progressive-left social-engineering enterprise is only possible with a fiat, unbacked currency and central banks.

The state and its cronies MUST have complete control over the money supply and debt creation, or their progressive fantasies would be impossible.

Money must be out of the hands of government, as a check on their power.

Be that as it may, it’s a fool-hardy idea which should be thrown on the garbage heap along with the many other failed Utopian fantasies.

The ideas currently being floated should be shredded, and thrown into a volcano. But conservatives shouldn't forget two things: one is that the public is going to demand some kind of public assistance, and conservatives have had very good ideas in the past in terms of how to meet that demand (most of which resemble "universal income"). And second, and most importantly, the relentless drop in the marginal cost of production indirectly leads to both the feasibility, and desirability, of ideas like this (although, not "income" in any meaningful sense, and of a far more limited amount than is being bandied about).

While it may be a political failure now, its time is coming. And if conservatives were to lead the way, instead of simply looking down their noses, these ideas could lead to tremendous gains for this country, both politically and economically.

We'll have a to agree to disagree here.

This "guaranteed income", per the article, still is tax payer funded. It brings back the question, why should I pay for someone else's income?

Please quote for me from the article and clause of the Constitution where the Federal government is given the authority to provide such a stipend.

Conservatives don't advocate on behalf of extra-constitutional powers. Period.

No, it would make it worse. Instead of having to deal with an "income cliff" or negotiate many various entitlement programs to survie, a basic income guarantee would be an immediately clear incentive for many more people NOT to work. And it would be pure nitroglycerine in the hands of leftist politicians. And don't tell me that "authorities" would then just lower the income amounts to "social engineer" the optimum amount of workers - that would NOT happen.

I’m sure there are already lawyers waiting to help him convert his ‘structured’ payout to a lump sum, for a ‘small’ fee. Then he will p*** through that in a few days.

You’re more learned on this subject than I, but the current lack of work ethic in this country makes me doubtful of this ideas success. Perhaps it would of worked 50 years ago when most everyone had a more responsible work ethic.

“He may not be the first to get money, but there is one subtle string attached to it; the same string attached to the welfare money. It’s not for “absolutely nothing,” as something is expected of them.”

Not for him.
