The first in the U.S.? I think not taking gubmint welfare into consideration.

Whether you're a doctor or a janitor, you'd receive the same predetermined amount of money each month, all of it funded by taxes.

Utopian, unicorn and rainbows Socialism, what could go wrong?!

Looks to me like a test case for helicopter money.

Within a week, he will be complaining that it isn’t enough money to survive.

I am pretty sure that he is not the first. There are many thousands of government employees, being paid much more than $1,250 per month, for doing absolutely nothing.

He may not be the first to get money, but there is one subtle string attached to it; the same string attached to the welfare money. It’s not for “absolutely nothing,” as something is expected of them.

They are expected to vote, and vote a certain way.

“to see how basic income might work around the world.”
sorry, but this is not the same as the “guaranteed basic income.”
This is a lottery.
There is no comparison.
Anyone who thinks this is a valid test to prove that the real thing will work, is an a$$hole.

Not to mention the thousands of fat people collecting SS Disability just because they're fat.

Not “basic income” as colloquially understood unless the money supplied was taken (vs given).
I’m all for you running a charity as you see fit, so long as participation is voluntary.
Taking money via police-backed taxation from the unwilling isn’t charity, and neither is giving that money to the idle able-bodied.

This is not socialism. Not even close. Socialism involves the public ownership of the means of production. This has absolutely nothing to do with who owns the means of production.

In fact, this really isn't a left-wing idea at all, having been advocated by many conservative economists for a long time -- as long as certain conditions are met (the simultaneous elimination of all other forms of welfare and transfer payments; the lack of an accompanying bureaucracy; a fixed pool of money out of which the transfer occurs without prejudice or means testing; a fixed pool of money not subject to majority-vote increase; etc.).

It is a sad state of affairs that "conservatives" ridicule this idea, when they should be championing it as a better approach to all forms of public assistance. Because "conservatives" simply sit on the sidelines and ridicule, this idea which holds promise will be implemented by the left, who will turn it into a nightmare.

We already know how “basic” income works. Go to any section 8 housing project. Pruitt Igoe comes to mind.

What’s to stop them from secretly working extra for cash? This is not the scientific method.

...and the concept is gaining traction around the globe.

No, it isn't. It just flopped in Switzerland.

Be that as it may, it’s a fool-hardy idea which should be thrown on the garbage heap along with the many other failed Utopian fantasies.
