In 1955, the small Californian firearms company ArmaLite unveiled one of the most defining and influential rifles of the 20th century the AR-10. The hard-hitting rifle would see extensive service in bitter colonial conflicts and provide the basis for the M-16, one of the most iconic rifles of all time.

All depends for what mission and who is using it...
Yes, we might.
Or the G3.
Or the AK.
My M1A is more reliable but the AR-10, for me at least, is a bit more accurate out past 500 meters.
Is the AK considered a battle rifle since it uses a smaller cartridge?
7.62x39 is still considered intermediate cartridge. So not battle rifle.
The FNH SCAR H is an awesome battle rifle.
That gets my vote too.
Agree, HK-91 is hard to beat
FALs are great fun, but the difficulty in mounting modern optics is a real issue.

Hmmm, it’s been a while since I’ve managed an inadvertent double tap on FR.
I did a reliablity test with my Armalite a few years ago. I bought a bunch of Portuguese surplus 7.62 battle packs. The powder did not burn clean at all leaving some pretty gritty residue. I went to the range and just started throwing lead to see how much of it my AR-10 would tolerate. Around the 200 round mark I could feel the bolt starting to bind during recoil and return to battery and needed to start tapping the forward assist. Got my first full malfunction (failure to eject around the 250 mark. I cracked it open, sprayed and wiped with some CLP and put another 50 rounds down range without a bobble.
I’m confident I would have had better results with cleaner, newer ammo, but with about 300 rounds of 7.62 in a light rifle, my black and blue shoulder had about all it would tke for the day :)
The AK lacks accuracy at long range. Not a problem for forces that don’t do marksmanship training (and only fight similarly trained opponents, ) but inadequate for combat where you have long fields of fire.
The FN Fal has the same issue as the M14 on full auto. It’s uncontrollable.
AR-10s have it all over the others in terms of accuracy.
Reliability hasn’t been an issue for the AR-10, since the first mags were STEEL. Much better than the original USGI, minority-contract aluminum 5.56 mags.
The ability to reliably and repeatably mount an optic? AR-10, easily.
The ability to easily free-float the barrel? AR-10.
But then the M-16, the US military's standard rifle, would be classed as an assault rifle as well, where in fact it is used primarily as a battle rifle.
I think the distinction is negligible.
Same with the Armalite. You'd think the wood butt and fore end would help, weight wise? But the barrel climb is horrible, sight picture lost with the first round.
But I don't want this thread to deteriorate into a debate over the relative merits of the AK vs. its competitors.
