The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo after a 4-year-old boy tumbled into the ape's enclosure triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that sharply criticized the Cincinnati Police Department and the zoo for putting down the animal and called for the child's parents to be "held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child."
Cincinnati police on Sunday said the parents had not been charged, but that charges could eventually be sought by the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When you've been marrying your cousins for 35 generations problems can arise.
The gorilla was tossing the boy around. Tranquillizers don’t work instantaneously... More damage or death could have occurred while waiting for the sedative to work
All that being said, it's a situation I wonder about. There probably should be a zoo employee stationed at that venue, or any venue where it's physically possible for a zoo guest to get in.
My historian pals blame the Black Death for this. Of course, intermarriage also sometimes increases the IQ - check the history of Ashkanazi Jews and my field of interest, the Plantagenets.
I don’t really know why they are so nutty about animal deaths. They wanted the American guy who killed Leo the Lion dead, dead, dead last year. There’s a screw loose somewhere.
I took my kids to zoos all over the country. They never tried to climb into a gorilla cage. And my girls were a handful.
I have to wonder what the mom was doing at the time.
I don’t feel one way or the other about shooting the gorilla, I simply don’t blame the gorilla for acting like an ape.
The reaction is predictable. Imagine if the gorilla had a name.
I know they had a chance to evolve but turned it down
Let’s not forget the chimp who tore the face off an American woman about 10 years ago. These animals are dangerous.
Yep...
It’s about time that parents were held accountable for their children’s actions.
While kids can certainly move quickly, and are masters at noticing when their parents attention is off them because they got distracted, apparently the kid was in the enclosure for a bit before the ape went after him.
Someone should have told the kid to get out of there and that’s missing from the story.
I will run something up the flagpole. Sort of like making lemonade out of lemons.
Why don’t they barbeque the ape to help raise money for a new one. How much do you think people would pay for a barbeque ape sandwich? How much outrage would there be if they did so?
Perhaps a pledge drive for the body with two sides, the barbeque versus the burial. The largest total pledged amount wins the body.
I grew up on a farm so forgive me.
No it is not its the zenith of exclamations
Yes, and yes.
That is why the decision was made to shoot to kill instead of trying to sedate the animal.
I wonder how long gorilla steaks would need to marinate.
How much can he (the gorilla) bench?
You know it’s what I live for
Darn. Read your post after doing mine.
Now we have to consider styles. Carolina, Texas, Memphis, Kansas City or other BBQ types.
