AMITE, La. - Decked out in full cap and gown, complete with a valedictorian cord, Andrew Jones showed up to his graduation from Amite High School ready to experience his hard work paying off.
He didn't get the chance because of what he was wearing on his face.
"Eventually they took my gown," he recalled, "They told me they had to take my gown from me."

He seems like they type that wont Work and play well with others.
He had no problems not working and playing well with others...Now working in San Jose for a rather large tech firm...
Uh he basically did all of high school in 3 years. He played varsity sport, took multiple AP courses, went to prom 2 years—just finished in 3 years and was not allowed to walk at commencement with peers...
Sorry, I meant the subject of the article.
I am a very good boss. I know my job. If I have a kid that can’t understand the rules or take care of service 24-7, I don’t need him.
That includes clearances and passports.
I may be talking over this crowd. Understood.
Let them hire the ones who blindly follow the rules of a failed institution.
I’ll hire the valedictorian who can think for himself and can recognize a stupid rule when he sees one.
Tell you what. You argue with the statement on your own profile page - which is at complete odds with the statements you are making here, both in general and in detail - and I’ll get the popcorn.
The statements on my profile page do not address a twerp that refuses to comply with the dress code of his High School graduation.
Get a Grip.
I hope you didn’t burn your microwave popcorn.
The smell is bad enough without that.
If he were a she transitioning to a he, they would have let her.
HE FOLLOWED THE RULES! The rules (literally enforced fit this one special day ONLY) were to shave or not participate in graduation with his schoolmates, after getting twin scholarships and a 4.0 graduation. Right?
So he choose to not participate. THAT'S FOLLOWING THE RULES.
On the other hand, what kind of rancid bastard would suddenly impose such rules for that one special day? He even tried to meet them halfway, and shave most of it, but leave a little. Nope - three times they said all or nothing.
Why?
Punishment, obviously. Facial hair for a young man, which he's worn with his peers all year, is a matter of personal pride and manliness. And he's black. And he got two scholarships and a 4.0 average.
Can anyone say "off the plantation"?
I sure can.
He didn't follow the script for a young black man. He excelled, when he was supposed to be a thug.
So he must be punished.
Therefore, on the very day he was to be publicly acknowledged for his success, his principal have him a "choice" (which was no doubt long planned): Either personally degrade and humiliate yourself, shame yourself and your very manliness voluntarily in front of your friends and show that you've been dominated at the hands of the school - or "you choose" to not be publicly acknowledged by your friends after four years of excellent work.
And then THIS malicious "Sophie's Choice" is justified by the "rules" by these sadists who run this school!
And with any luck, he'd be so outraged he'd do something stupid, like force himself into the stage, get arrested, and then - finally - have a black mark on his scholastic record.
You're looking at a profoundly evil plan here - which he was smart enough not to buy into.
The people who did this to this young man are EVIL.
Ah yes. FREEDOM OR DEATH!!!!
Um, unless you have facial hair and the rules of a school that can’t itself meet basic standards forbid it.
If at this point you still can’t see the absurdity and simply backwards priorities that you’re advocating here, no amount of education will help you.
Go ahead and hire all the mind-numbed robots you want. I’ll hire this valedictorian... if I can outbid all the others who want to hire him.
I had no idea what his race was and nor do I care.
Well the people who raped the rules to screw him over sure cared about his race. Too bad you refuse to see its relevance. That doesn't make you morally superior - it makes you complicit in REAL racism by denying it when it happens.
I doubt bidding will be required.
In my line of work discipline is key. I follow the corporate step to making it better for my boss and my patriots.
This comes in a myriad of ways that are visible to the customer.
He is young and will learn.
He should have shaved and took that diploma on stage. He did not and gets to be the next Sally Struthers.
Dude, you have no idea of my background or my mentors.
You are so off base.
Typical.
Dude, you are what you type. So if what you're typing here represents your background and your mentors, I don't advise bragging about them.
So it's RACISM HUH! Thanks Talisker.
A Banker from Chicago. A Federal Contractor from LA.
A Master Sgt in the USAF.
Guess What...........
They didn’t have thses rules when my son graduated 2 years ago. He didn’t h ave long hair but he had a full beard. He looked like a time traveler from 1968.
He has been shaving since he was twelve.
We got him an Easter basket one year that had a little chocolate bunny, an electric razor and a box of ammo.
Fun times.
It makes me wonder about the rest of his class if that is their valedictorian.
Sorta off topic. My first husband went to jump school in his 30’s. He had worn a mustache for years. First day the instructor said nobody ever passed jump school with facial hair.
He shaved it off. If you want something bad enough, you conform. That’s not racist or punishment.
