DESIGNATED SURVIVOR. From writer-producer David Guggenheim, who wrote two 2012 movies: Safe House (53% positive on Rotten Tomatoes) and Stolen (16%). When the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Defense, Attorney General and almost all the other top-ranking cabinet officials die at the same time, Kiefer Sutherland finds himself running the United States.

I know the "designated survivor" thing done during the State of the Union address, and that it's a different person every time.
An interesting premise....Thoughts?
Pretty adventurous for ABC, unless of course the villains are a straight, male, and conservative group. I wonder what position Sutherland occupies before his elevation? And if they take into account the normal absences of certain members of SCOTUS.
“An interesting premise....Thoughts?”
It’s a good concept, I mean sometimes it’s the Secretary of Labor or someone like that. Interesting to think of a person chosen for some combo of expertise and political hackery having “greatness thrust upon them”.
Love Keifer Sutherland, so we’ll def. check this out if it happens.
Presidential line of succession is;
1) V.President,
2) Speaker of the House of Representatives,
3) President Pro-Tempore of the U.S.Senate,
-—Cabinet Level (Oldest to Newest Dept.s)
4) Secretary of State,
5) Secretary of the Treasury,
6) Secretary of Defense,
7) Attorney General,
8) Secretary of the Interior,
9) Secretary of Agriculture,
10) Secretary of Commerce,
11) Secretary of Labor,
12) Secretary of Health and Human Services,
13) Secretary of Housing and Urban Development,
14) Secretary of Transportation,
15) Secretary of Energy,
16) Secretary of Education,
17) Secretary of Veterans Affairs,
18) Secretary of Homeland Security.
So which post be he? Agriculture?
It figures it would be a Canadian.
But how did Ted Cruz miss out on the opportunity?
I might have to watch this. Love Kiefer Sutherland.
I don’t know. It sounds to me like a difficult storyline to have as a continuing series.
If some cataclysmic event caused this to happen, then that new president would appoint a Vice-President under the 25th amendment, then appoint a completely new cabinet, as would any incoming newly elected president. And with some exceptions, the president’s cabinet would be confirmed by the Senate, and life in the government goes on. Then at that point, isn’t it just back to business as usual????
I would support a Jack Bauer presidency.
The practice of naming a designated survivor originated during the Cold War amid fears of a nuclear attack. Only Cabinet members who are eligible to succeed to the presidency (i.e., natural-born citizens over the age of 35) are chosen as designated survivors. For example, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was not a natural-born citizen (having emigrated to the United States at age 9 from Czechoslovakia) and was thus skipped in the official line of presidential succession. The designated survivor is provided presidential-level security and transport for the duration of the event. An aide carries a nuclear football with them. However, they are not given a briefing on what to do in the event that the other successors to the presidency are killed.
So, to answer your question, I imagine that anyone after the Sec. of Labor is open to be the 'designated survivor' There was one time when Hillary was Secretary of State where she was also out of the country in London at a conference. They had a DS for that event as well, but if something happened, Clinton would have gotten the nod over the DS because her position was higher up the line of succession.
Beats the hell out of having John Cusack in the line of succession.

“I would support a Jack Bauer presidency.”
I’m in.
I suppose it’ll depend of the backstory going into this, wouldn’t it?
What if the previous President was into some kind of high-level chicanery?
What if the new President were EXTREMELY unpopular among the citizens? Or, how about unpopular with foreign governments?
You see....it all depends on the backstory.
Jack Bauer as President? Yep, I’ll have to check it out at least.
Already done on “The Last Ship”.
I’m going with Secretary of Education, as he was out on a battleship at the time;)
Never saw it.
19) Secretary of Transgender Bathroom Rules.
It’s actually a pretty good Series.
You have to start from the beginning to get the entire Story. I think Season Three starts soon.
They also has the same sort of situation on the newest version of Battlestar Gallactica.
