Navy SEAL Trainee Dies in Coronado
NBC San Diego ^ | 5/10

Posted on 05/10/2016 3:04:11 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A U.S. sailor died Friday during a SEAL training exercise in Coronado, California, officials confirmed. Seaman James Derek Lovelace, 21, passed out in a military training pool while undergoing basic underwater demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S), officials said.

Lovelace was withdrawn from the exercise when he began to have difficulty with the drill, Navy officials told NBC News.

The sailor lost consciousness and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful NBC News reports.

The Navy had not announced the training death until after officials were contacted Tuesday by NBC News and The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk.

The death is now under investigation, a Navy spokesperson said.

BUD/S is the SEAL's infamous training course with several phases including the one that's called "Hell Week." The majority of trainees who enter the program end up ringing the bell to quit. The small percentage that complete the entire program earn the SEAL trident on their uniform.

No other information was immediately available.

That’s my guess. Or something like a PE or arrhythmia. Fulfilling a lifelong dream and he had to have been otherwise healthy.

I just got done with a book on tape by a Navy Seal.

It was more focused on his humanitarian work than the actual killing of hadjis, but it still had merit.

The guy was a previous Golden Gloves boxer and was a lot tougher than his classmates; he said they dropped out like flies mostly because they lacked inner or mental strength, not physical stength.

He related how one of his classmates died in the pool.

The book is called the Heart and the Fist, by Greitens. Not an awesome book, but it was OK. The author narrated it himself which was interesting as he is obviously not a trained narrator.
