Russia’s will deploy its new RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles to units in Siberia and the southern Urals when the enormous new weapon becomes operational in 2018. The massive liquid-fueled missiles will replace the existing Cold War-era R-36M2 Voyevoda (SS-18 Satan) ICBM—which is the largest such weapon ever built. “The development of the Sarmat silo-based missile system with a heavy missile is nearing completion,” Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces told the Moscow-based TASS News agency. “It will replace the Voyevoda missile system in the Uzhur missile division and the Dombarovsky position area.”

For a while they were flush from yuuuge natural gas sales to Europe and the eastern end of the continent. Then came gas discoveries in other regions, including Israel; and fracking here, and suddenly Russia’s money flow tapered off.
If we remember the Cold War, the Soviets were famous for faking yuuge stocks of armaments. Fields full of plywood or inflatable army tanks, etc. looked formidable through early satellite cameras, from 200 miles up. But then the U-2 Spyplane with high resolution cameras came along, taking low-level photos, and suddenly our photo analysts were laughing themselves silly at the phony, fake armaments the Reds had on display in an attempt to fool the Western powers.
At this point, Obunga is WILLING to be fooled. The totally bogus Iran nuke deal, where Obunga PAID them $150 Billion TO BUILD nuke weapons and the missiles to transport them, is Exhibit-A.

Not really. First, their SSBNs are damn near docked up 95% of the time. When they sortie, they take rescue and salvage craft. NOT a good sign. The new SSBN is shaking out and is having trouble. We usually start tracking them once they hit open water and then we can hear the vodka bottles hitting the steel floors. Crew turnover and conscription makes them much less effective.
Second: EMP is over rated. They COULD do it given their large warhead capability (25MT in the late 90s), but those are specific targeting for LCCs in our ICBM fields. They wont waste those.
All this was possible because we do not have a Gen. Pinochet in our ranks.
Many in the Defense establishment viewed his backtracking on the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the pulling out of Jupiter Missiles from Turkey and his signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty as a betrayal and a traitor.

I'm not sure why liquid fuel would give us an alert prior to a launch. What is your reasoning? Just curious.
The fuel has to be loaded into the rocket just before launch. Solid fuel rockets are set to go when needed. It takes time to fuel those missiles, a good deal of time I believe.
I beg to differ. Liquid fuel missiles use storable, hypergolic fuel and oxidizers. Old Atlas ICBMs used LOX and had to be loaded prior to launch. When the Titan II ICBM came online in 1962 we had a liquid fuel missile that was ready to launch in a moments notice. The only thing that would signal a launch was when the Silo Closure Door opened. As soon as that door cleared the Launch Duct the Fire Engine signal would be sent from the launch computer and the engines would fire.
On a Titan II ICBM the total time of the entire launch sequence was 52 +/- 5 seconds.
All Soviet liquid fuel missiles starting in the late 60s copied the Titan II system and were of the storable variety.
One of the big reasons we went to solid fuel (Minuteman and Peacekeeper) was the relative safety of the solid fuel compared to the very hazardous liquid fuel and oxidizer. The solid fuels do not have as large a Specific Impulse as the liquids and the Russians want to launch a large number of very big nuclear devices so they are still messing around with the liquids. Again. These liquid fuel and oxidizers are stored directly on board the missile and do not have to be loaded just prior to launch.
You know better than I. My recollections go back to Atlas times.
I spent six years on Titan II Missile Combat Crew and then four more years on Minuteman Missile Combat Crew, then went on to missile maintenance and other things.
In the old days the conventional wisdom was that a liquid fueled rocket would take about 2 hours to fuel up and be ready for launch, and our intelligence people specifically would look for that activity as a possible prelude to a preemptive attack on the US.
