Have you ever literally thrown money away? I think I just threw out $625.

There are times when one has to look in the mirror and think "I'm with Stupid". I have no one to blame but myself. Once I realized to my horror, that the money order wasn't there anymore, I had to accept it, and make plans to do without it. I was short of breath, my hands were shaking for a while. I searched everywhere backwards and forewards. I had to remember, it was 'only money'. I rarely use my checks for certain transactions. Some vendors take weeks to finally cash the check. I want to be sure they have what is required. This is one of the few times in my adult life that I was glad to be single so I wouldn't have to explain to my spouse what the hell happened to the missing money. "Mistakes were made", as a well liked president once said.

My apartment refrigerator is old and began leaking, making a big wet mess. My Landlord hauled it away and replaced it. Before he put the new frig in place, I spent a few hours cleaning up all the soggy, now useless rubbish on the floors. It wasnt' till yesterday that I realized I may have accidentally thrown a money order in the trash along with other wet pieces of cloth and plastic and paper. There is no one I can get mad at but myself. Most times I would have stored my cash and money notes inside an old leatherbound clock next to my Laptop. The clock is analog, and has a hinged door that snaps shut. I had hoped to get this clock repaired in the area, so I emptied it, stuffing everything into an empty shoe box on the floor. After the leaky frig incident, I spent hours sifting through wet matter, throwing out what looked useless. Thank God, I have a second job, and was able to regain close to that amount very quickly. Live & learn, right?

A friend of mine bought an old pink Princess telephone from a flea market. When he got it home, he took it apart to clean it. Inside were a set of diamond engagement and wedding rings. He went back to the flea and said to the guy, "I bought that pink Princess phone from you last week, remember?" The guy said yes, but nothing else. So my friend gave him his phone number and said, "If you ever have any more Princess phones, let me know." But the flea never called him back. This way, he left a pathway in case the owner of the Princess phone and the wedding rings traced back their steps, but why should the flea keep the rings if they weren't his to begin with? Finders keepers.

Some people like taking things apart, then reassembling later. They are good friends to have. The idea of cracking a old phone open ‘to clean it’ would never have occurred to me.

You can decide whether to sell it to the pawn shop or loan it (pawn). You have to tell them which.

If you loan it, they ascertain the loan value and the amount of interest to get it back. Usually it’s a 30 day term loan, which means they cannot sell it as long as you pay it off before the loan expiration period. Of course if you don’t show up in that time frame to pay back the loan and interest, the pawn shop keeps your property and sells it.

Back in in 1976 as a cop, I was dispatched to direct traffic at a house fire. Long story short, the foundation was saved, that’s all. The old lady (probably my age now) lost everything but most especially $40,000 in cash from her dead husband’s business, stored in an ammo box in the basement. The firemen found it and it was cooked ash. I watched the woman bawl and carry on. I took three days off, went from Ohio to DC with the box of ashes, gave it to the Revenuers who did whatever they do (weigh the ashes, sample the paper, I don’t know) and they returned $34,000 to her. She baked me a cake, paid for my gas and published an editorial about me.

Don't feel bad, I've got an entire binder of Alex Rodriguez rookie cards, and an autographed Rafael Palmeiro bobble head doll.

My mom threw out all of my baseball cards when I was in college, I basically had entire sets from '64 to '68 and two Nolan Ryan rookie cards. Whenever I wanted to make her feel bad, I'd remind her of that.

It was more my fault, though, and it was about 15 years before the baseball card craze of the early 90s.

That was a great thing that you did, over and above the call of duty. Very compassionate for another human being who was suffering. Others could have tried to help her, but didn’t. That was HUGE!

Heh, heh. I just that week got out of a training class with the SS and they told us this about this way to determine money lost. It just happened to be very fortuitive. Sure, I took three days off, but my buddy in VA and I went to Matt Kaine’s Little bit of Ireland so all was not lost. Great PR for the PD, a learning experience for me and a hell of a hangover for my buddy. Great time.

What a wonderful story! God bless you!
