I "bought" a $40 access to CARFAX Saturday, they charged my card $54.99, I can't imagine ever getting the difference refunded, and the VehicleHistory.gov site charges $4.95. Live and learn. And next time check FreeRepublic first!
(Excerpt) Read more at vehiclehistory.gov ...
I see that now. For some reason when I first read it sounded to me like the VehicleHistory.gov charge was an add on at Carfax.
Except that he is a she (see tagline), you’ve got it!
CARFAX quote = $40.00
CARFAX charged = $54.99
VehicleHistory.gov would have been = $4.95.
Are you logged in?
I second this. ALWAYS get the vehicle inspected by a trustworthy mechanic.
When my 19 year old was recently car shopping he took 2 cars with “clean” Carfax reports to be inspected and the mechanic found evidence of multiple accidents on both.
If u join CarFox, do they still charge for each VIN search, or does the membership entitle you to a whole bunch of them?
Just carry a fish wrapped in newspaper when you look for used cars. No CarFax needed.
LOL. I wish I had been Saturday, I wouldn’t have been ripped off.
Can you dispute the excess charge with your credit card company?
Freepers are GENIUSES!

One VIN is $39.99 and good for 60 days, 5 VIN reports is $49.99, and is also good for 60 days. The Unlimited CarFax reports is $54.99, also only good for 60 days, which, coincidentally, is what is selected as the default when you enter your payment information. This is what I suspect happened. OP wanted single VIN report for $39.99, but the default was unlimited for $54.99.
Actually, I just got an email from them, and they will be refunding the difference.
Still, lesson learned.
I am amazed sometimes at the diversity of knowledge of FReepers, especially when it comes to tech stuff.
