I "bought" a $40 access to CARFAX Saturday, they charged my card $54.99, I can't imagine ever getting the difference refunded, and the VehicleHistory.gov site charges $4.95. Live and learn. And next time check FreeRepublic first!

Just another data mining scam. People are really just too uninformed to get how much of their lives are out there for the world.
It is none of your damn business how many time I get my oil changed. Suckers.

Well, I used carfax once and everything was absolutely great with the car we were looking at. No issues and nothing reported. Only problem was that nobody reported the accident it had been in so my one time buy for the carfax info was totally useless. DOH! Live and learn. I steer folks away from carfax whenever I can. If you can, a good overall eval from a trusted mechanic is the way to go.

$40 to Carfax + $4.95 to VehicleHistory.gov = $44.95
Charge to Excellence's credit card $54.99
Difference of $10.04

There are actually a couple teaser sites that give you most of the VIN information you need for free.

I see it now. He wasn’t charged by both sites, just presenting the alternative to the $54.99.

I believe that is the case, yes.

I read it as the following:
- He agreed to pay $40.
- He was charged $55.
- He could have purchased the same service elsewhere for $5.
- Somehow he could have known better if the checked FR first. (I must have missed that thread.)
