Video at link. So teens who are old enough to develop at least a basic sense of right and wrong steal a car, drive like a bat of hell through the most congested parts of Pinellas Cty, ultimately losing control and plowing into a lake and drowning, never mind the other lives they put at risk. And it's the cops fault. More BLM logic at work. Tragic, but play stupid games, win stupid prizes, a simple concept that transcends race.

I don’t have any major questions to raise. The criminals stole a car and then died from being stupid. Time to move on. Perhaps other parents will take their role more seriously and teach their kids that stealing cars is not okay, or maybe even that stealing is never okay.

"But dashcam video only shows the officers standing near the pond, watching the girls' car sink, and calling for backup."

The "girls' car"? Didn't they steal it?

Reminds me of an incident years ago in Tampa. A 14 year old was out at 2 AM with his buddies (on a school night) in a stolen car. In the ensuing chase the driver wrecked the car and the 14 year old died. His mom said, “They shouldn’t have been chasing them!”

Better questions would be:

1. Why is your 14 year old out at 2 AM on a school night?
2. Why was he with thugs who stole a car?
3. Where was his father?
4. Etc......

Is this the trio who had been arrested umpteen times already for auto theft?

In comments on another news site it was mentioned that these girls have stolen cars before. I haven’t fact checked that, though.

Once the car went into the water, the behavior or personalities of the occupants does not matter. All that matters is whether or not the cops did the right thing.

So let's see, it's dark and that lake is murky and deep (I've read it's around 15 ft deep at some points). So no cop there chose to do something wildly dangerous. No crazy heroes stepped forward.

And I given the situation, I'm OK with that. It's tragic, but the cops did nothing wrong there. After all, there are some building fires that are so bad that even brave firemen choose not to enter.

The cops shouldn’t have lied about trying to save them.

But so what, in this case? What were they going to do, dive down to the car under the water in the dark and free the girls? The girls should have opened the doors themselves and swam out. Sh!t happens when you steal a car and run from the law.

“”My daughter was not perfect,” said Laniya Miller’s mother, fighting back tears. “What 15-year-old is?” “

These girls had multiple arrests for stealing cars. The car they drowned in was stolen.

This was not the first stolen car for these girls.
Their unfortunate demise is their responsibility and probably a blessing for their future victims.

The girls are accused of stealing a car

Umm, Ms. Miller, I hate to break it to you, but 15 year olds I know don't steals cars. They are not perfect, as you say. But they are not felons either.

If the car thieves planned on driving into a lake to evade police, they should have had the sense to wear personal flotation devices in advance.

Very sad to think somebody lost their car. It was probably used to take the owner to.work and shop. What a shame to have your vehicle totaled by thieves.

If this is the same incident I am recalling they had been caught joyriding may times before....

I am sorry that their lives ended before they cold come to grips with how stupid their behaviors were... but that’s the funny thing about behaving stupidly.. you don’t always get the opportunity to live to regret it.

The girls are accused of stealing a car in a Walmart parking lot

1.- They are accused of stealing the car because THEY STOLE THE CAR from a man who was kind enough to offer them a ride.

2. - Between them, the three girls had been arrested on vehicle theft charges seven times in 2015

3. - Butler had been arrested twice for vehicle theft, including her latest arrest on Jan. 18, when she was also charged with burglary, petit theft and possession of marijuana. Her previous arrests included resisting an officer without violence, burglary and retail theft.

4. - Battle had four prior arrests for vehicle theft along with arrests on charges of burglary, resisting an officer without violence, failure to appear, and violation of probation.

5. - Miller’s only other arrest was for vehicle theft.

6. - The mothers were all upset that the sheriff's department released the girls mug shots and their previous arrest records.

7. - Natasha Winkler was upset about how her daughter has been portrayed by the sheriff’s office.
“She should not be remembered as a thief,” Winkler said. “I’m even more sad about how this story has been twisted.”

8. - Clemmons is also mad about the way her daughter was portrayed.
“I don’t like how you all are slandering my daughter’s name and making her look like she such a known criminal when she’s not such a known criminal.

"It doesn’t matter how many cars she stole,” the mother said.

Takeaways ... You can’t open your doors when underwater and in mud. Electric windows stop working when your car is submerged.

Have a center punch easily reachable in your car.

Yep, I can’t believe this.

These teen thug criminal girls steal a car, drive recklessly on a police chase, drive off the road into a pond and drown, but the fault is with police who didn’t save them? Really? This is the logic at work here?

How did police know they would be needing frogmen standing by to go find these girls as a result of the chase??? Sheezee, common sense just goes out the window nowadays.

Tragic, but the teen girls brought about their own demise. End of story.

In what universe is it acceptable to commit grand theft?

Answer? No universe.

If their parents beating these kids would have kept them from stealing someone else's valuable property, and ending up dead, then maybe that would have been better...
