Howdy Dio! Not very well, as it turns out (thank God) - back in my path lab days we never did get it to grow in vitro. Unfortunately there are plenty of live carriers. Most labs use rabbits.
Interesting little critter - those proteins on the outer cell walls that identify a foreign organism to the immune system? T palladium doesn't have them, or at least not enough to count, which is why it persists in a host for decades. Very high transmission rate - you'll read 30% on the Internet but I think it's actually a lot higher than that, especially with the repeated exposure typical of unprotected gay sex.
It's still curable by a single shot of penicillin, which is why a lot of people apparently think being careless is OK. Except that infection increases the susceptibility to HIV in the meantime. There are antibiotic-resistant strains but mostly they're resistant to antibiotics other than penicillin, which is bad news for people allergic to penicillin. Given how little it survives outside the body and how sensitive it is to penicillin, we could wipe this disease out in theory. In practice, it's growing.
You can get over syplys. What we need is a bullseye tattooed around every gay mans rectum.

Actually, they blamed Reagan for the disease they spread. Yes, because Reagan didn't order that a cure for the HIV virus be immediately found.
That despite the fact that male homos were chiefly responsible for spreading the disease with their promiscuous and unsafe habits. And they, the homos, refused to take measures that would have stopped the spread. Simple measures like using condoms.

In related I recently saw an HIV stat in Texas stating that 75% of the infected population were male homosexuals. There is a delusional factor involved in promoting as hunky dory something which brings wrath (expressed in disease).
That was during the bath house days.
A friend of mine went gay after 20 years of marriage. He got bugged within a year.
That was less than 10 years ago.
Either that or an anti-gay video is to blame...........
I have given blood three times since then at the Red Cross and as far as I could tell their questionnaire had not changed at all from before, so maybe the change has yet to be implemented. But maybe a man who answered "yes" would just be asked additional questions and possibly be allowed to donate. (Why they would want to do so, other than to spread infection among non-homosexuals, I don't know.)
But the Red Cross on the surface is still being vigilant against people who might have HIV or AIDS giving blood.
