Ending the drought in the West will require rainnot too much rainand smarter ways to collect and store that water. But something else that can keep things moist? Believe it or not: Beavers.
According to a story in Water Deeply, a group of ecologists have a plan to help repopulate the Central Coast of California with Castor canadensis, the large beavers which once roamed the state in great numbers. (Not to be confused with their ancestors, giant beavers that were seven feet long.) The idea is that beavers are natures hydrologists, engineering the way that water travels through the landscape:

So, human-made dams that provide power and mitigation of flooding = bad. Beaver-made dams that do not provide power, flood random areas, and cut off water to random areas = good?
Okie day...

I can just see all the gazillion water regulators, so used to munching on the sustenance of the people (OK, maybe not the best metaphor), giving up all their petty tyranny so a bunch of wild animals can do the job faster, cheaper, and more intelligently than they can.

“But beavers chop down trees... and environmentalists hate that! What a dilemma.”
But since trees are the leading cause of forest fires, they are solving two problems at once.

I think that is their plan. If a dam is ruined by beavers, the result is flooding, which can then be declared a wetland to be forever under government control whether or not it stays wet. If there are enough beavers spread out think of all the new wetland the environmentalists can claim to have created?
Since when have groups that propose to introduce or reintroduce animals ever care about the damage as a result?

Okay, I just had to...
Supplying “beavers” in one context could be bad, another context could be good. I’ll have to get back with you after reading the thread.
