A United States aircrew helped rescue three stranded men from a deserted Pacific island after the sailors used palm fronds to spell the word "help" and waved their lifejackets at rescuers.
A Navy P-8 aircrew based out of Japan and vessels had been searching for the men, reported missing after failing to arrive in their 19-foot craft at the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to catch an early morning flight on Monday.
Bulk carriers Brilliant Jupiter and Ten Yu Maru were also engaged, conducting 17 hours of search across nearly 300 square kilometres of ocean.
The US Navy crew members, normally based 3,840 kilometres away, spotted the survivors on the remote island of Fanadik and shared their location with relatives, as well as with the searching ships.
A small boat then picked the men up and took them to Pulap in FSM, the US Coast Guard said.
The mariners were back to safety three days after going missing.

Why would they spell “blEH” on the beach?
I wonder what "The rest of the story" is? -Tom
Looks like paradise to me
The Skipper is an expert seaman, on a "three hour tour", and he couldn't build a boat to get home?
The Professor is a genius scientist who can build anything that might make things more fun but never succeeds in building something to help them get rescued?
Gilligan is the world's biggest klutz, and he happens to trip over everything that might get them off the island?
I sense a pattern here, and the pattern matches what I would do in their place.
Seems like a great place to get away from it all.
Why leave?
Amelia Earhart? Richard Halliburton? Their kids?
Agreed. He has a unique brand.
Never saw that before. Well, I sure won’t post them, then.
It looks like they spelled, “KELP,” to raise awareness of the growing seaweed problem.
I like the one where scientists are working over a nuclear warhead on a missile, and another prankster scientist is sneaking up from behind with an inflated paper bag, ready to pop it.
FYI. Please see Post 14. Gary Larson has asked that others not post his work online.
Oops. Just saw that you already saw #14. My apologies for being slow to catch on.
No problem there. I will at least, not add to his situation going forward.
