A North Portland restaurant that sparked outrage, protests and drew criticism for weeks for its historical associations with English colonialism has changed its name.
The month-old Saffron Colonial, opened by Portland native Sally Krantz, will now be known as the British Overseas Restaurant Corporation, or "BORC" for short.
--
Controversy quickly broke out over the Saffron Colonial name and menu, which included a Plantation Punch. At least two protests gathered outside the restaurant, hoping to force Krantz to change the name. Vendors such as Ristretto Roasters and Steven Smith Teamaker cut ties with the restaurant.
---
In an email Friday, Krantz shared why she changed the restaurant's name:
My intention in opening this restaurant was not to be divisive, exclusionary or hierarchal. I have no interest in recreating colonialism, racial prejudice or bias.
My journey has always pointed towards inclusion, discussion and sharing of all viewpoints. I have spent 20 years traveling and absorbing lots of different cultures, not just through business, but also through literature, architecture, art, and of course, food. As a chef, this is critical. My direction in life has always been about exploring and celebrating other cultures, learning about them and trying to express this co-mingling through food.
Clearly the name Saffron Colonial did not convey this, but rather became divisive, which was not the intent. I have never had a problem changing the name, but also wanted to take some time to develop the right name. I feel B.O.R.C. reflects both what I am trying to do with the food and will not separate us, but will hopefully allow us to move forward together.

What a complete bunch of idiots the race hustlers are.
Thanks Obama for setting race relations back at least 50 years.

If you have a Trader Joe’s nearby go there. Their saffron is quite affordable.
Never shop at Penzy’s. It is owned by a liberal who uses his catalog to bash conservatives. He even used his catalog to bash Scott Walker.
Well, we do, and I’m going to check it out, thanks mate!
“I wonder what they will start calling Colonial style homes. Selling real estate in some areas of the country might get rather difficult.’
“New England Traditional.”
my colonial house has a master bedroom.

In 50 years, all restaurants will be named Taco Bell anyway.
Realize that you use maybe $3-4 worth in a dish that feeds 6-8, when using it to flavor a paella. It’s just not that big a deal.
That was the one time I’ve been in there. I buy most of my spices at the local international grocery store, it is huge and all kinds of awesome. Has an island that’s maybe 6’ x 12’ stacked high with clear plastic containers of about 60 or more different spices, dried herbs, and mixes. I will never buy the overpriced glass jars at the grocery store again.
But thanks for the heads up. I continue to be amazed at the number of businesses that are so overt about stuff like that. Why would you intentionally reduce your customer base like that?
We’ve gone nuts...
Portlandia... what can one say?

While I agree they share similarities, try selling a home as a New England style home in the South, LOL.
I guess I’ll have to head down to Raffles tomorrow for a tasty Singapore Sling.
Quinn was by Dylan and first recorded by Manfred Mann. I don’t think Donovan recorded it.
I hear you.
After the taco wars?
