An Associated Press-GfK Poll released Thursday finds Donald Trump’s “unfavorable” numbers are nearing 70 percent. The AP reports:
Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It’s an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.
Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, close to 70 percent view him unfavorably. And among whites without a college education, one of Trump’s most loyal voting blocs, 55 percent have a negative opinion.
It’s worth noting that none of the top candidates are above water in this poll. Ted Cruz is at 26-59 and Hillary Clinton is at 40-55. Still, Trump has the highest negatives and those numbers seem to have shifted some time in the last month:
As you can see, Trump’s unfavorable numbers have been hovering in the high 50s since last July. Again, that’s roughly where Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton are now. But the current poll shows a 13 point jump in the “very unfavorable” numbers as well as a 6 point drop in the total favorable numbers. Not surprisingly, the number of people who say they would not vote for Trump also jumped upward in this poll:
What’s not clear is why Trump’s unfavorable numbers are peaking at this moment. Yes, he had a bad week in the media but when hasn’t he had a bad week in the media? It seemed for months that none of his comments or Twitter attacks could damage him, but the poll suggests something has changed recently. Was it the attack on Ted Cruz’s wife that was a bridge too far? Was it his comments on abortion last week? Without knowing what it is that did the damage how can he try to recover?
Respondents to the AP poll even rated Ted Cruz more honest than Trump. Asked if the word “honest” described each candidate, 56 percent said it did not at all describe Trump compared to 36 percent who said the same for Cruz. Trump has taken to calling Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” in public appearances for the past several weeks.
The good news for Trump is that he appears to be crushing both of his rivals in New York, with a Monmouth poll this week showing him breaking 50 percent. A convincing win in his home state could help rally his supporters and maybe give him a chance to turn some of these unfavorable numbers around before the convention.
I never pretended anything of the kind but I will aver that they can reveal trends which can be very predictive. Look at the trend, Trump's negatives are not going from bad to worse they are going from terrible to calamitous.
My objection to anecdotal evidence stands.
She went by Red in Brea (or something close to that). She didn’t post a whole lot. But when she posted on a thread why she wasn’t going vote for Trump when the primary came to CA, thats when the foul message came.
She said since she stopped looking at FR (and all other political news) her spirits a way up!
I would like to follow her example. I have only had a FR account for a little less than a year and can’t believe how much the two side are hating each other. But I got to keep up with whats going on. I hate being uninformed....even if it is healthy for me!
17 years is pretty good! My mom would not last 17 minutes on FR and she is second cousin to SCOTUS Pierce Butler.
Anecdotal evidence is worthless.
True, and so are many polls, especially the ones that 1) are comprised of soft questions about feelings, 2) are referring to an event seven months away, 3) are filled with hypotheticals. These factors, combine to make these favorability polls meaningless. Polls that ask “who are you voting for tomorrow” are far more reliable, in part because the pollster has a vested interest in getting it right.
Carson said something interesting when Megan Kelly asked him whether Trump could learn something from Carson’s vastly better likability ratings.
He said [paraphrasing] “True, a lot more people liked me, but they didn’t vote for me. Nobody liked Trump, but they all voted for him (laughing)!
When was the last time you looked at popular vote stats from previous presidential elections? At best you get maybe 60 million voters participating in any one major election. In which election have you seen 250 million voters participating in the popular vote? It has never happened and will never happen.
Okay let’s see if we can make this simple for you. If there are 10,000 people at a Trump rally in a town of say 100,000 people it would appear that he was really popular. However, the facts are that means only 10% of the people in town came to his rally. If you assume some of these people are not from that town, but drove in from other areas to see him then even a smaller percentage in the town like him enough to come to his rally. There might also be people who came because they wanted to see this guy they’ve heard about on TV, after all he is a reality TV star and a billionaire, so cut the percentage a little more. So, pretty soon you might be down to say 7-8%, which means over 92% of the locals don’t really like him all that much.
Bottom line “big” rally crowds don’t mean squat. Sarah Palin had crowds as high as 25,000 here in Indiana back in 2008, and McCain lost the state, a first for a republican since 1964.
You Trumpsters are amazing. Do those rose colored glasses work on other things other than Trump?
“I think thats true enough, but with time the opposite happens and people begin to see the depth of his thought and commitment and seriousness.”
That’s pretty funny. For the last several weeks the depth of his thought and commitment and seriousness has consisted of “Donald Trump is a bad man” and “I’m not Donald Trump”.
Two way Street.
A Cruz Supporter Posted a fake Opus and Damned the Trump Supporters on FR to Hell.
That FReeper is still here today Posting trash against the Trump Supporters. It comes from both sides, period.
Did your Mother forward that particular PM to Jim?
That Poster should have been kicked off FR for that.
It’s not that simply. Good people, mostly military but some DOD’s, job is to study various scenarios and the worse thing that could happen is more nukes out there. Laugh it you want to, but more nukes is more for the bad guys.
It works both ways. There are many Cruz supporters on FR who are incredibly rude, insulting and hypocritical to the extreme.
They proclaim what perfect Christians they are while, at the same time, damning to Hell anyone who dares to vote for a candidate other than Cruz.
It’s even worse on Twitter. Some of the Cruz supporters are breathtakingly vicious, vile and even perverted. A male Cruz supporter tweeted that he wanted to find naked pics of Ivanka and post them online. I reported the pervert and warned my followers about him.
So you can stop acting the victim. The rudeness and insults go both ways. Personally, if I find a respectful, polite Cruz supporter, I treat them with kindness and respect.
OTOH, if I find a snarky, rude Cruz supporter, I also treat them accordingly.
It is entirely due to those who conduct the polls. Ignore the polls. Vote according to your own decision. The lemming approach is for those who believe media we already know can't be trusted.
Since the last Presidential election had 127 million voters you are already wrong. So Trump has 6% of the number of people who voted in 2012. That still doesn't make him overwhelmingly popular.
I stand by what I said as well, If Ted Cruz actually wins this after going in to the convention with less delegates, he will be destroyed in the general. He doesn't have what it takes to handle the heat he will get.
The good news: It's likely that Trump will be the nominee, and we won't get to test out my observation.
I'm not laughing anything off. You should know that the only nuclear proliferation is to the bad guys.
Rubio supporters. No
Carly supporters. No
Jeb supporters. No
Carson supporters. No
Paul supporters. No
Huckabee supporters. No
Santorum supporters. No
30% of the republican primary vote not the same thing.
Yep, by November he will be at least 150% negative.
Sometimes I have to step back and say God has a plan for our good. The world might be in chaos, but maybe the chaos is to part of Gods plan to wake people up to our real problems. Tell your mom to come back after Ted wins. Give it a month actually.
Then you should know the nightmare our kids will live under with anybody and everybody having nukes. Yes, we’ll nuke the bad guys first, but how the world will change.
