You gotta admit though, the magnets he used proved a denser energy storage medium than most alternative technologies have.

Read up on the device. It causes the magnets to decay.

You would have to continually print more magnets as fuel.

There are lots of patents for perpetual motion machines that don’t work.

Only if the patent clerk is incredibly lazy, or very stupid.

The professor I learned optics from back in the 70's was a consultant to the US patent office. He told us they typically reject thousands of patents per year as perpetual motion machines of either the first or second kind. From time-to-time they would send him an application with a question about whether it was a perpetual motion machine. If he replied that it was, the application was rejected on that basis alone.

I own devices with “permanent magnet motors” and I am sure that people here do as well. They have a wide variety of applications. They are generally more efficient than induction and other types of electric motors. They still need electric power to work.

Here is an article that compares them to induction motors:

The only perpetual thing I know of is a woman nagging her husband with no indication of ever winding down.

They don't do that without eating.

Oh yeah, incredible new applications going from this for sure.

This one is quite different.

Regardless of the source of magnetism, the magnets are not doing any work. The energy is being supplied by the external field, not by the magnet.

If by "quite different" you mean "total bollocks," then, yeah, it's quite different. Not only does the inventor not understand magnetism, he doesn't even have a realistic theory for how his device "works."

So, somebody got one past the patent office.

It happens.

Permanent magnet motors/generators are typically used in small windmill, small electric scooters, and electric bicycle projects because they are the most efficient in these applications. I owned a bicycle hub motor that had dozens of powerful magnets on the rotating portion of the hub. Any piece of steel or iron that came near it was drawn toward it.

I have a Chinese Army hand powered generator that produces 12 volts that uses a permanent magnet motor/generator and an electronic voltage regulator. It weighs many times less than the WWII Signal Corps generator that I also own. The WWII hand powered generator is also based on a permanent magnets and outputs 4 different voltages from 3 volts to 500 volts for an “Angry 9” WWII radio transmitter. The Chinese generator uses more powerful rare earth magnets and is a much simpler design.

I was the one who purchased them for a buck each and sold them on eBay at 10 times the price. Thank you!

They are more efficient because less power is needed to create the magnetic field.

Brilliant, yet simple.

This is one of those things that if the designer told someone what he wanted to do, they’d tell him it was impossible.

IMO, any schlep could have been tinkering around and discovered this technology. Those are the most impressive discoveries to me.

As others have said, the uses for this are almost limitless. They will still be being discovered in fifty years.

Well, the Patent Office eventually realized that awarding patents for terminally stupid designs was probably a bad idea.
