Belgium Fears Nuclear Plants Are Vulnerable, Guard Murdered; Security Pass Stolen

BRUSSELS — As a dragnet aimed at Islamic State operatives spiraled across Brussels and into at least five European countries on Friday, the authorities were also focusing on a narrower but increasingly alarming threat: the vulnerability of Belgium’s nuclear installations.

The investigation into this week’s deadly attacks in Brussels has prompted worries that the Islamic State is seeking to attack, infiltrate or sabotage nuclear installations or obtain nuclear or radioactive material. This is especially worrying in a country with a history of security lapses at its nuclear facilities, a weak intelligence apparatus and a deeply rooted terrorist network.

On Friday, the authorities stripped security badges from several workers at one of two plants where all nonessential employees had been sent home hours after the attacks at the Brussels airport and one of the city’s busiest subway stations three days earlier. Video footage of a top official at another Belgian nuclear facility was discovered last year in the apartment of a suspected militant linked to the extremists who unleashed the horror in Paris in November.

I sent that picture to my address book. Europe , except the children and some others, deserve what’s coming to them.

Nothing at all significant happened at TMI. Don’t go making stuff up and scare the ignorant. Same as Fukushima. Nothing significant happened there in the big picture. Chernobyl, yes.
And Chernobyl is now a huge pristine nature reserves.

Not time to be lazy. Reissue all badges only to the areas required to do your work.

Upgrade all systems to fingerprint ID. High def cameras on all corridors and parking.

It’s not that hard to secure a facility.

Just know who the contractors are to do the work.

Hey - remember when people like me warned you people in Belgium.

And the people of Belgium laughed, sneered, gave us the finger and called us racists?

All I can say now is: your fear of a dirty bomb is racist....

“This is exactly why we need a wall and strong border control.”

As well as deportation.

Literally on the eve of Germany’s invasion of Belgium in 1914, British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey said “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”.

He was right.

The Great War killed nearly 10,000 men a day, every day, seven days a week, for over four years.

Europe never recovered.

That’s true.

This time America shouldn’t and really can’t intervene.

I wonder if the Europeans are stupid enough to hire all Muslim staff just to show how Muslim friendly they are. Like we do in our airports.

I considered that. It is not as easy to do as is believed. TMI released very little. It would be very difficult for a few individuals to seriously damage a nuclear power plant. They are far harder than most military bases. The unitiated would be very suprised.

It is a standard design for BWR Mark 1 Containments. The fuel pools were never intended to hold as much fuel as they may now contain. That said with dry cask storage available the spent fuel density can be reduced to the point where the remaining bundles could air cool if all the pool water was lost. Radiation levels would be VERY high of course but the fuel would not burn as has been postulated. You can thank Jimmy Carter for this. He stopped spent fuel reprossing based upon the recommendation of an anti nuke activist who was a history major. It was a terrible decision.
