American Express has notified US authorities that some of its card holder information was likely compromised almost three years ago after an unauthorised person or group accessed one of its merchants' systems.

The breach took place on 7 December 2013, but Amex said it had only now become aware of the intrusion.

The payments card giant asked members to take steps to protect their sensitive data as a result of the data breach, including monitoring their accounts for suspicious activity.

Customers won't be liable for any fraudulent activity, Amex said.

In a notice to customers filed with the Californian Attorney General last week, the chief privacy officer of Amex, Stefanie Ash, said account numbers, names, expiration dates and other information could have been exposed.

Since they are required to report in a TIMELY MANNER in California, I assume that certain executives will be ARRESTED for violating the law.

"...Amex said it had only now become aware of the intrusion."

Timely enough.

I have an AMEX card. It was issued to me by my employer. If anyone tries to use the account, I would immediately get an e-mail from corporate, demanding that I fill out an expense report.

Irritating, but effective.

Happened to me last year - on a flight, stayed over at an airport motel. Next day Amex sent me an email saying they’d declined a charge. It was for R5000 from India; a specialty grocery store. Seems the guy who ran my Amex card is Indian and out of the three motels on my trip he was the only one who could have done it. R5000 is equiv. to $75.

Couple of years ago Amex cancelled hubby’s card twice within a 6 month period for charges out of state that weren’t his. He had never left home.

When I use any of my CC’s at a point of sale machine I’m always asked for my zip code. This usually happens outside of my area. Then too, I have limit codes and other stuff to notify me of any fraud. So far the Amex thing was the only one.

Timely information. Just received an email supposedly from AMEX requesting that we verify some personal information because of a security breach. Particularly strange because we cancelled all of our credit cards four years ago including ones we had from AMEX which were in the business name.

Always suspicious, was checking source of message when up popped a warning through AVG. Responded to that and deleted the message.

Timing of all of this was eerie.

If the breach was 3 years ago, the expiration dates should have passed by now.

That may be why I’ve received a.few emails lately saying it was amEx. Closed the account over 2 years ago. I figured it was phishing and deleted them.

American Express is the only card I will use. It’s not a credit card. It is a charge card which is to be paid in full each month. Every charge is text messaged to my smart phone simultaneously as it is made. Great customer service too.
