‘I have to do what I have to do” was Donald Trump’s justification during last night’s debate for why he used what he called a corrupt visa program to hire foreign workers at his properties. After the debate, Trump proved his point when he accused a reporter of fabricating a story that she had been grabbed and bruised by his campaign manager while trying to ask Trump a question.

That denial flies in the face of all the evidence. “This was, in my opinion, made up,” Trump told CNN. “Everybody said nothing happened. Perhaps she made the story up. I think that’s what happened.” Trump may have done what he had to do to protect Corey Lewandowski — his Red Bull–swigging Mini Me — but his statement flies in the face of all evidence. Ben Terris, a reporter at the Washington Post, wrote he witnessed Michelle Fields of Breitbart News approaching Trump after the debate.

He said Lewandowski “grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the way,” bruising her. An audiotape of a conversation between Terris and Fields that took place in real time confirms the incident. (There is video footage documenting the immediate before-and-after of the incident, though not Lewandowski grabbing Fields.) For more than 24 hours, Fields did not comment or publicly discuss the episode, but when accused of making it up she released a photo showing finger-shaped bruising on her arm.

What the Times report did not mention is that Mercer is also one of the most generous backers for Breitbart News Network, a group of right-wing news and opinion site that command considerable influence among the conservative base.

Although the reporter here is white, this is looking more and more like one of the many “rape” hoaxes and “gunning down an innocent, unarmed black teenager” hoaxes the left regularly trumps up. At first there is a great hue and cry about the “horrible” thing that was done to the “innocent” du jure. Then there's an investigation where it turns out the “innocent” wasn't so innocent after all and may have faked all or part of her testimony, as happened with Tawana Brawley. Here the "innocent" appears to have made a very bad, improper move toward Trump and been properly stopped by a security man in a proper takedown. Obviously, just like Tawana Brawley, who concocted her story to avoid trouble with her parents, this individual needed to avoid trouble with her employer for her improper conduct; thus, she did a Brawley and tried to frame Lewandowski.
