What is the largest number (this is not a trick question)

Posted on 03/04/2016 5:01:38 AM PST by LibWhacker

We all know that a billion is a lot and a trillion is a lot more, but what do you call numbers that are even bigger? A Googol is bigger: it's 10 to the hundredth power—but it's not the biggest. In this well-researched 19 minute film, master explainer Sharkee takes us through ever larger numbers.

He applies three rules. The largest number cannot be a number plus 1. The number must be useful in some way. And infinity doesn’t count, because it isn't actually a number.

VIDEO explaining how they arrive at these really big numbers (Googolplex is nothing) -- [19 minutes]

BUZZZZ! Stop, the ball dead, go back to your previous base. If you allow division by zero, arithmetic does not work.

google is not the name of a company .... it is the highest number ... (which is why they chose the word “google” for the name of their company)

“The largest number cannot be a number plus 1.”

The above is true as the proof for the existence of infinity and the fact that there is no largest number is that there exists no number to which 1 can not be added.

It’s pretty much meaningless drivel because any of those numbers +1 IS a bigger number and saying it does not count is schoolyard game rules. If adding one is not convincing, then double or triple the whatever number. I don’t see the point in studying such numbers. Unless your counting Trump votes of course. .... Just kidding

No. Googolplex is Googol to the Googolth power. That's the highest I know.

I don’t understand the idea that a number has to be useful in some way. Its utility is in its mere existence. You can always add one more, to a number without bound.

Exactly my response when I first heard the “rules.” Then I thought, “okay, if those are the rules, then they’re the rules.” It’s like a game. You play by whatever arbitrary rules are set down. Now... given that... what is the largest positive integer you can come up with? Following the rules?

BTW, did you get a chance to check out the Googology Wiki? Fascinating. I can see I’ll be spending some time there.

Correct. It’s just an arbitrary rule. See my response to BRK immediately below your comment.

What’s the biggest number is like asking how big is the universe.

What I would like to know is how big is the largest calculable number, in other words, what math problem has been solved that resulted in a number with 20 zeroes in it?
