Why College Is So Expensive, And How To Fix It

It's no secret that a college education in America is more expensive than it's ever been. With tuitions at many Universities now exceeding $40,000 per year, even a plethora of financial aid opportunities and scholarships leave the average student approaching or upwards of six figures in debt as a result of their four year degree. At the same time, while tuitions have skyrocketed, the number of full-time, tenured (or tenure-track) faculty have barely increased at all, while the number of part-time adjuncts (usually without benefits) have made up the gap. You don't need to be a math professor to know that this doesn't add up: students are paying more than ever, while there hasn't been a real increase in the number or salary of full-time professors. It's no secret where all the money has gone, though. It's gone to administrative overhead, as that’s where the majority of "growth" in colleges have been.

But they make no sense if you get a worthless degree in women’s studies, black studies, or English literature.

I disagree with part of that assessment. My oldest daughter majored in English to my dismay, because long ago I too believed it to be worthless. However, many lawyers study English and become successful. My daughter got a degree in English from U.C. Berkeley, and immediately became successful first in the magazine business as an editor and writer, then in the tech/medical field because of her English degree. She's been pulling down big bucks well into the six figures. Another daughter with an unrelated degree also went into the publishing business as an editor. There's money to be made there.

Boycott. Stay out of debt. Become more self-sufficient. Begin a lifetime of regular self-study with an aim toward independent business.

Congratulations to you on your daughters!

Their success may be more-attributable to such innate qualities as drive and discipline than to their education, however.

Regards,

Good for them. If they were able to parlay their degrees into solid careers, that’s great.

I agree. My daughter is 30, married, has a good job at a bank. Paid off her student loan in 1 year. Because of that, she and her husband qualified for a low-interest loan and built a new home.

It’s has a lot to do with ambition and drive.

Yes, I have to give them credit. They both studied hard and wanted to graduate as quickly as possible to hit the job market, got top grades. One had enough credits to graduate in her third year but decided to take more courses for a fourth year. My oldest told me that one just showing up breathing was enough to pass, a remark intended for the students allowed into college who don't belong there and the corresponding lowering of standards.

Get rid of all the liberal arts departments, and all the sports teams.

Some of those degrees are obtained by people who want to work in an unrelated field that simply requires college (police officer, military officer, for example).

How To Fix It

I decided to share my opinion before reading the article.

The absolutely finest way to improve education at all levels is competition but first the government must get out of the way of education.

Now I can read the article.

The system is screwed up. I studied mathematics and computer science in college and went into I.T. However, I worked alongside people who were not proficient and got their jobs simply because a degree was required, and nonrelated degrees were acceptable (geology, for instance). I know, the idea is to show that the person worked at studying and attained some general skills in college. But it's detrimental to those without a college degree that showed real aptitude and real experience with computers.

In the old days, one could start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder as they gained skills and experience. Now, a college degree is required and idiots (with college degrees) are put in positions above their ability to do the job. My wife started as a clerk typist right out of high school and eventually became a manager of a large I.T. mainframe computer facility. Without a college degree. Can't happen now. One of my brother-in-laws did not graduate high school, took an equivalency exam for a high school diploma and became an SF cop. He was well suited for the job, having been a juvenile delinquent with lots of run-ins with cops and took a liking to them. Cleaned up his act and did well until retirement.

It should not be a requirement for many jobs to have a college degree, but in this politically correct atmosphere people are afraid to hire those who they believe can best do the job, and just go with the screwed-up system.

I think with military officers and cops they wanted someone they viewed as a little more educated because of what they deal with (especially cops; they couldn’t have them beating motorists/suspects regularly). As for other fields, the perception is that they can thin the herd of applicants, but they definitely aren’t getting the best candidates with that simple screen.

Works for me. Btw what did E1s make in the 60s? $100 per month?

The colleges are just a conduit.
They pay the dough to a plethora of liberal admins and profs who donate to Democrats.
The “big education” cycle....

It is also simple to say stop doing all the stuff that inflates the cost of college, instead of some radical restructuring.

I seem to remember $90@mo for E4, but it was so long ago. E1 time was short - maybe a month or 2 - I totally forget.
