Need help with ipod

The kids gave mom an ipod several years ago. They put tunes on it for her back when, now she wants some new stuff added. I signed up for iTunes and bought some new music.

How do I get them on there? The library doesn't match and it seems to want to delete the old stuff. It won't sync or upload because I'm to "authorized". Why is this so convoluted?

Ok - so you are going to have a significant issue here as your itunes on your computer is likely the latest version. If the iPod is prior to the last (2?) generation it likely cannot take the latest itunes software updates and that means you can’t sync with your computer anymore - I ran into the same issue with my version 1 about 2 years ago.

Easiest option is to sign into itunes by wifi on the ipod itself instead of via the computer. I think that still works. Other option would be to email yourself the file and then open it on the ipod and try that.

Your standard MP3 player will allow you to copy and move files from one player to the next all day long. Not so with the Ipod.

This might be due to the licensing agreement between RIAA and Apple since it would make easy to clone the music.

It is a bit of a pain in the rear and it would be really nice to be able to “transfer” the songs on an old device to a new device without involving Itunes. Especially third party MP3 songs that were converted from a CD, etc. which are also on the older Ipod.

Also, important to note: Apple may not have a complete list of previously purchased songs even if the user was able to find the original email/account name.

And early on, Apple used account names versus emails as the customer id. A few years ago, Apple required everyone to change their user id to an email. So the original id may be a name or it could be an email.

I have personally experienced all of the above and it can be a bit frustrating.

Rather than “sync” you can just leave it set for “manually manage audio”

Then, inside of iTunes, just drag the new tracks from the library to the iPod (Depending on your computer’s operating system, etc.)

All such things change with each update...
There are also various free apps which might let you get things off of the iPod (again, depending on versions, etc.) I used to use a thing called “Senuti” for that (iTunes spelled backwards!) which was a Mac app.

What worked for me was:

I uploaded all of the tunes currently on the Ipod to my computer.

Then I uploaded any new music on to my computer as well.

Then I used the ITunes software (without signing up for anything and without giving them my credit card number) to convert the new stuff to the ITunes format.

*Then I plugged in the Ipod and selected and deleted all tunes on it.

Then I uploaded the tunes I wanted.

*For some reason if you skip this step you have problems.

My biggest suggestion would be that if your kids gave it to her and helped put the music on it in the first place, ask them for help.

Unfortunately, iTunes is set up, ahem, discourage piracy, and if you no longer have the original computer with the original songs on it, it will try to remove them. Same as other people said about using different accounts, authorizing, etc.

If you (or they) no longer have the computer, someone will have to gather all those pieces of music back together (from whatever sources) and place them on your new iTunes account so that they can be loaded on your ipod when it syncs. This is not trivial. If you can beg one of your kids to do this for you, thank them profusely and buy them a pizza.

In the future, whether you continue with an ipod, or acquire a different device, you really need to keep and take care of your music library. Place it in a special directory, make backups, keep it organized. That way, you can enjoy your music trouble free for many years to come.

Wow. That worked?

That might violate the license agreement since Apple cannot validate your rights to the music without logging into an account. Seems like the software would prevent that from happening.

Also, very good point — the original song files are stored on the original computer.

And I wonder what happens when you do create an account and log in. For example, you want to add songs to your library. Will Apple delete all unauthorized media?

Thank you. The original account is long gone, the kids don’t ipod anymore. Mom likes it because they gave it to her. Didn’t think I’d run into this much trouble.

That works for some people, but they are never good at predicting for me. Spotify works better.

“The reason why it seems convoluted is because there was an original account that was used to purchase the music currently on the iPod. Any new music would need to be purchased with that same account in order to “add” it to what's there. A newly created account is just that: new. So, you can't have two accounts active on the iPod — which means you need to either:
Stick with the original account, or:

All true. We have had 5 or 6 different computers with our iPod/iTunes account.

You can preserve both libraries, if you have two accounts.

Steps:

1) Log into the original iTunes account
2) Authorize your computer as an additional authorized computer. You can have up to 5.
3) Restore your library from the iCloud. If you can't you may have to call Apple support to get it done.
4) Sync with your iPod.
5) Share with another account, your other iTunes account. If you can't do this on your same computer (I've never tried that) get another computer on your network with that account and share the tunes.

This is all described somewhere in iTunes, but this is my distilled experience of 10+ years with an iPod.

The trouble with Pandora is that you have to listen to what Pandora sends your way. They may play what you generally want to hear, but if you want to listen to something specific, like an entire album, Pandora may not offer it. I do listen to Pandora on occasion, but it is not a substitute for loading an iPod or iPad with the exact music you want to hear when you want to hear it.

When I inherited my Ipod from my daughter, I faced the same problem. Your kids probably installed the music, using THIER OWN computer, rather than your computer. Sooo..that Ipod is registered on THEIR computer only.

You’ve downloaded and installed the ITUNES software..

(please note that I use ITUNES 11 plus...why? Because it works well.. I don’t like to upgrade software when the present software WORKS WELL.)

BUT.. BEFORE pulling up ITUNES, (before starting the software) FIRST, plug in the IPOD, into the USB port on your computer...THEN start the ITUNES software.. the ITUNES software SHOULD then automatically go to the screen that asks you to REGISTER the Ipod..so, Register the Ipod on your own computer.

Scroll down a bit. Do you see the word OPTIONS? Do you also see the words (located below the word OPTIONS) “SYNC ONLY CHECKED SONGS AND VIDEOS”.. click “SYNC ONLY CHECKED SONGS AND VIDEOS”.

Next..look at the TOP of the software.. Do you see the word, MUSIC? Click MUSIC.

Doing so will open another window or screen. Be sure that “SELECTED PLAYLISTS, ARTISTS, ALBUMS, and GENRES are checked.

Do you see the words, ARTISTS on the RIGHT SIDE of your screen or window? Make sure that all the ARTISTS listsed there are checked.. (this would include the music that your kids previously put on the Ipod.)

Next.. Scroll down the screen again.. do you also see the word ALBUMS? Click ALL the albums listed there.. If you click the ARTISTS and the ALBUMS listed there.. then ITUNES will NOT DELETE the music that your kids put on the Ipod.

Of course, the same holds true of the PLAYLISTS and GENRES listed. Be sure to check those playlists and genres that you wish to keep.

NOW.. scroll to the very bottom of the screen or window.. Do you see the word APPLY? Click APPLY.. ITUNES will then automatically SYNC the music that you’ve checked to your Ipod.This procedure will take a few minutes to complete, depending on the number and content of the albums you’ve checked in the lists. So, be patient.

Now.. how in the world does one get their music on ITUNES to be able to allow ITUNES to put that music on your IPOD ?

There’s any number of softwares that are available to RIP your cd’s to Mp3 format... here’s the one that I use.. it’s a FREE software, called FREERIP (go to www.freerip.com ) you can download the FREE version, or go for the Premium version, which costs money.

Download and install FreeRip. It’s generally recommended to read the TUTORIAL.. to find out how to use it.

Once you’ve mastered how to use FREERIP..(it’s easy..but READ the TUTORIAL) then, you can RIP each of your individual albums in Mp3 format to a single individual folder for each album. Again, READ THE TUTORIAL to learn how to do this. Oh, yes..be SURE to LABEL each folder with the TITLE of each ALBUM that the folder contains.

How do we place each individual album folder into ITUNES? FIRST.. go back to ITUNES...

Look carefully ..do you see the word “FILE” on the UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER of ITUNES? Click “FILE”...a menu will appear. Look carefully ..do you see the words, “ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY”? Click “ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY”.. another window that contains the DIRECTORY of your computer Hard drive will appear. Simply NAVIGATE to the location of each FOLDER with your music in it.. click that folder, THEN Click “SELECT FOLDER”.. that folder will then automatically be added to the ITUNES library. Repeat this procedure to add each individual folder.

Better yet- ask your kids to copy the music FROM the ITUNES library Media folder that’s located on THEIR computer, to a USB flash drive.. then have them give that flash drive to you, so that you can then add the music from that flash drive, to your own new ITUNES account on your own computer..that way; if the ITUNES software erases the previous music...you’ll still be able to add that music back to that specific Ipod.
