Good info — OP said the original computer is gone, but if the credentials are still available, this would be a good way to go if the account can be accessed.

I believe that ITunes now allows you go convert the file to MP3 and keep the old Apple proprietary version, too. It is in one of the menus. I am not certain if the DRM still applies but we have converted a number of files to MP3 so that we can play them in our car on a flash drive (without needing to use an ipod).
Anyway, gone are the days of having to burn a song to a CD and then ripping the same song to MP3. Yuck!
Also, seems like Apple is getting away from the DRM locked music. RIAA used to be very paranoid (rightfully so) of duplication. You still need an ipod to play the Apple proprietary format but it is a lot easier now to convert it to an MP3 so that it can be played anywhere.
I mainly use iTunes to import CDs I already own. I seldom buy music from iTunes.
