San Diego Hiker is Third to Die in a Month on SoCal Trail
NBC Los Angeles ^ | Feb 21, 2016 | Heather Navarro

The third hiker in a month has died after hiking Mt. Baldy trails Saturday, the coroner's office confirmed.

A 45-year-old San Diego man was killed after slipping while on the Devil's Backbone trail.

He fell 1,000 feet down the mountainside, the San Bernardino County Coroner's office said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said a 911 call came in from a fellow hiker who saw the fall.

The sheriff's department launched a helicopter to search for the man, and transported him to Arrowhead Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. The coroner's office would release his name once his next of kin was notified.

Mt. Baldy is located in the San Gabriel Mountains in San Bernardino County.

The trails were closed Feb. 8 after two hikers died within a week. The trails were later reopened.

"When you get on the backside of those mountains, those trails are only about a foot and a half wide," Mike Ells of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. "They take one bad step, there's nothing to stop them." Published at 5:42 PM PST on

People don’t look where they’re going and all it takes to fall to one’s death is one wrong step!

I’m not that adventurous.

Not familiar with that trail, but there are lots of mountain hiking trails which don’t have guard rails. You can’t be too careful.

Yup. I would avoid them and even if you’re a seasoned professional, too dangerous.

Of course if you fall that far, you probably won’t feel it.

>He fell 1,000 feet down the mountainside

At 32 ft per second squared the final velocity is beyond most DinDus ability to calculate.

Blam! Shattered spine, stopped heart and brain and internal organs leaking out all over.

Not a pleasant way to die.

What does this have to do with insulting black people?

i was wondering, what did it feel like?

do you just tumble on rock, get knocked out? or are you conscious all the way down till splat...

and what are you thinking about, if anything.

did they check his phone for selfie?

Old shoes not good. New shoes can be just as bad. Semi-worn shoes with good treads just right.

I've hiked baldy myself and I don't see how this guy did it without a running jump. It's just not that steep.

Some people pass out as soon as they reach velocity. I think the more of a daredevil you are and the less fear of heights you have the LESS likely you will pass out on the way down.

Right you are. I used to do a lot of hiking in Northern Arizona. I bought hiking boots and wore them around for about a month before I used them for hiking. Also one thin pair of socks then a thick pair over them. The thin socks were like a fourth layer of skin and took the rubbing.

You probably wouldn’t know it.

I fell off a hiking trail and down a hill a few hundred feet when I was a kid. You feel it all the way down. Bumpity, Bump, Bump. Painful.

The devils backbone doesn't sound safe to me. I have hiked up to Angels Landing. Angels Landing is at the top.

It's only 1450' drop.

Is that as steep as those trails get?

I don’t ascribe DinDu to only black people. It includes islam, welfare leeches, logic-blind democrat voters and white scum. Sure, a lot of blacks retain attitude from following urban stupidity but it ain’t because they are black...it’s because they are morons.

This happened to me when I was kid. You roll down the hill and feel everything until your head hits something hard. Then it’s lights out.
