Why did Calgary cave to chemophobes over fluoridation?
The Globe and Mail ^ | Feb. 19, 2016 | Andre Picard

When Calgary city council decided to end water fluoridation in 2011, one outcome was clear: The number of cavities in children was going to go up.

Five years later, we have the hard evidence that the perfectly predictable has indeed come to pass.

A study published in the journal Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology shows that Grade 2 students in Calgary had an average of 3.8 more cavities in 2013-14 than they did in 2004-05. In Edmonton (which continued to fluoridate its water), during the same time period, the number of dental caries (or cavities) increased by 2.1, on average.

In other words, ending fluoridation is not the sole reason oral health has deteriorated, but it is a significant factor.

So, why did Calgary city councilors make a decision that has caused a lot of children unnecessary pain and that will cost their parents a good chunk of change in dental bills?

They essentially bought into the unscientific rantings and overblown fears of a small but loud minority of self-centered chemophobes.

If I wanted fluoride, I’ll just buy it at the store.

Don’t force it on me.

Exactly!

Also how do you control the dose of something like fluoride and what form of it is safe?

I personally think only calcium fluoride is safe, any other form well, I am not so sure.

Also where they add it to the water and some people are sensitive to the it and develop flouridosis of the teeth which can be just as bad as rotten teeth.

I grew up with ground well and there was particularly lower than average levels of fluoride in the water and all our family’s teeth where fine.

It is just another damned thing local government can tax and regulate, TOSS IT OUT!

At 53, I have been drinking fluoridated water all my life.

I also have zero problems with my teeth. Never a cavity.

Fluoridation works.

We always had sun tea 2-4 times a week even in the winter, mom would set the jar on the window sill in the morning when it was cold yet sunny outside.

Not just Canada. I’ve talked to a dentist who says the bottled water craze has increased his cavity filling business.

Fluoride is highly toxic that causes more harm then good.
It’s one thing to chlorinate water to kill harmful bacteria and pathogens.
It’s quite another to throw an industrial waste product into our water supply that’s proven to cause brain damage in children and affect public health in other ways.
If I want fluoride for my family and I, I’ll buy toothpaste with sodium fluoride. Thank you.
BTW: dental cavity prevention has Much more to do with eating habits (avoiding sugary foods & beverages) than it does with ingesting fluoride.
For the thousand who strike at branches of evil, only one strikes at its root.
Consuming excess sugar (resulting in bacteria producing excessive acid) is the biggest reason why kids get cavities.
Our kids have not had a single cavity in their life.
They grew up with well water, and were virtually forbidden candy, soda and table sugar. They ate Lots of fruit and prefer staying away from sweets to this very day now that they’re grown up.

Harvard study, 2012.
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/fluoride-childrens-health-grandjean-choi/

“The average loss in IQ was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15.* Some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity.

Why not put xylitol in the water? It’s not a nasty fertilizer byproduct. Putting something in water for EVERYONE regardless if age or weight is stupid.

Did you know that there is a theory that cavities are caused by bacteria? I had an ulcerative tooth at age 5 and problems with cavities in future...my sister and brother who ate and drank same as me did not have similar problems.

Theory? What else other than bacteria would rot and eat away at the enamel and pulp of a tooth? If you can’t get to the dentist or can’t afford the dentist and have a cavity, put some raw garlic on it, that kills the bacteria and helps with the pain, well it does after you get over the burn of the raw garlic itself. Cloves or clove oil will do the same but not quite such a burn. You’ll eventually have to get a filling, but doing this will minimize the pain and infection for the duration until you do.
