In the 1910s, Vesto Slipher noticed that the spiral nebulae in the sky were redshifted, consistent with the interpretation that they were moving away from us. In the 1920s, Hubble discovered that these nebulae were in fact galaxies, and determined their distance from us. If you combined these two facts - that there were distant galaxies that rapidly moved away from us - you noticed an interesting trend: the farther away a galaxy was from us, the faster it appeared to be moving away!.....
"But if it's expanding," almost everyone asks upon first learning about this, "then what is it expanding into?"
(Excerpt) Read more at forbes.com ...
Our Milky Way Galaxy is on a collision course with the Andromeda Galexy. ETTA for collision is around 3 billion years.
The universe is expanding into the same place your dreams go when you wake up.
Where have you been, son?
Scientists discover hidden galaxies behind the Milky Way (explanation for "The Great Attractor?")
Itself.
Read that but the headline is click bait - they only managed to see through some dust which obscured the area - and the real headline is that they discovered another 800 plus galaxies. They were also able to chart the various galactic clusters moving toward it and the distances (including our own cluster) from it. The Great Attractor itself remains unseen and a mystery. But we do know that whatever The Great Attractor is, it is bigger than the biggest known black hole - whose accretion disc would cover the orbit of Neptune.
tl,Dr but, it’s space itself that is expanding.
How can it be expoanding? Is there a boundary?
It’s expanding into the imaginary time dimension.
Read up on the big rip and never sleep soundly again....
[ Or even better, there’s the notion that we are living inside a false vacuum. ]
That one will keep you up for sure too
shrinking, expanding, it’s all relative.
Basically correct.
I don’t know what’s going on with the expansion, but I recently hit the trash compactor button one too many times and created a black hole in the kitchen. Lost my sandwich to that thing. Wife yelled, and I took out the trash, and I haven’t seen my neighbor’s cat since.
It is contracting into a supermassive Black Hole.
Galaxies further *down the hole* from us seem to be moving away because they are falling faster.
Galaxies *not as far down the hole* seem to be moving away because we are falling faster than they.
Capiche?
Empty space... the same stuff that's inside liberals' skulls.
Space itself is expanding
Capiche?
:) Especially the liberal presidential candidates. Can't get more empty than that!
Nope. Space(time) is Contracting.
