Apple apologizes to customers, updates iOS 9.2.1 to fix ‘Error 53’ iPhones
Mac Daily News ^ | February 18, 2016

“Today, Apple is issuing an updated version of iOS 9.2.1 for users that update their iPhones via iTunes only,” Matthew Panzarino reports for TechCrunch. “This update will restore phones 'bricked' or disabled by Error 53 and will prevent future iPhones that have had their home button (or the cable) replaced by third party repair centers from being disabled. Note that this is a patched version of iOS 9.2.1, previously issued, not a brand new version of iOS.”

“The update is not for users who update their iPhones over the air (OTA) via iCloud,” Panzarino reports. “If you update your phone that way, you should never have encountered Error 53 in the first place. If, however, you update via iTunes or your phone is bricked, you should be able to plug it into iTunes to get the update today, restoring your phone's functionality. Note, that the update will NOT re-enable Touch ID.”

“Allowing a third-party Touch ID sensor to function properly without an official Apple repair center both verifying that it is legitimate and recalibrating the cable to work with your iPhone's Secure Enclave is a huge security risk,” Panzarino reports. “A malicious repair shop or corrupted part could allow unauthorized access to your phone or its data. Apple is absolutely right to disable Touch ID -- it was also wrong for it to disable your entire iPhone for getting your home button replaced on the cheap. If you want to retain Touch ID functionality, you can get your home button replaced by Apple.”

MacDailyNews Take: And, thusly, “Error 53” was laid to rest. Under the bright light of this iOS update, class action shysters scurry away in chase of the next ambulance.

Lessons learned on each side by both Apple and their customers, we can only hope.

If you, or someone you know has had their iPhone 6 or 6Plus screen replaced by a third party repair shop, or done it your self, with a third-party screen that had a third party home button already attached, Apple has some good news for you. Apple has released a new version of iOS 9.2.1 just for you which will PREVENT your iPhone from being BRICKED on the next update! It will also fix a BRICKED iPhone 6 or 6S that has been rendered useless. (note iPhones that have been updated via WIFI should not have encountered this Error 53 problem). Use iTunes to re-install iOS on your iPhone and everything should be OK for the next update. PLEASE NOTE! This update will NOT restore TouchID function to your home button because the requires an actual Apple TouchID part and Apple Service to Sync it to your Secure Enclave. You will need to see Apple Service for that. -- PING!

"This update will restore phones 'bricked' or disabled by Error 53..."

I thought "bricked" meant bricked. Apparently there are degrees of brickage.

How much money does the Apple Store charge to fix a cracked screen v Dr. Cellphone? The wife’s 5s has a cracked screen but still works. I don’t believe it has touch ID so maybe that’s not an issue?

Be smart folks.

Don’t rush to put the latest update on your phone, computer, tablet. Unless you are having a problem the update is known to solve, wait a while & be sure the new update isn’t full of serious bugs.

It is better to have an older, stable, WORKING operation system than one not thoroughly tested by the masses. Let the other guy do your beta testing for you.

The iPhone 5S DOES have a TouchID so you either need to make sure they KEEP your original home button while replacing the broken screen. If they don't, and merely replace it with the generic that comes with the new 3rd party screen then the fingerprint reader will not work to open the iPhone and ApplePay will not work, and you will have to pay Apple to replace it again to make them work. The reason is that the home button with the TouchID are mated/synched to the Secure Enclave co-processor built in to the A7 processor of the iPhone. Only Apple, or an authorized Apple repair center, has the software tools to re-synch a new home button/TouchID to the Secure Enclave. Third party repair shops don't have that.

You can replace the screen yourself with do-it-yourself kits, and you can carefully take off the original home button/TouchID and swap them. If you do that, there will be no problem. It takes longer, but swapping screens is not hard. Most screens come with the tools you'll need.

All bricked devices can be recovered with the right fix.
